As an Autonomous Release Engineer, you will contribute to solving challenging and complex problems facing vehicle autonomy — building the tools, instrumentation, and processes that make releases faster, safer, and more confident.Autonomous Release Engineers are responsible for the integrated functioning of the autonomy system. Release Engineers interact with sensor hardware, middleware, autonomy software stack, networking, health monitoring, compute platforms, and electronic systems. A key part of this role is building and improving the tooling and automation that supports release validation, readiness assessment, and system health monitoring. You will be a go-to person for understanding how new features fit in, how the system might fail, and how to keep the system working reliably.This is a hands-on, systems-oriented role requiring strong technical judgment and a builder's mindset. You are expected to actively challenge release readiness when necessary and act as a safeguard for system quality — not just execute process. You will play a key role in scaling release cadence without compromising safety, partnering closely with autonomy, infrastructure, engineering, validation, and operations teams. This position reports to the Sr. Manager, Autonomy Technical Release.Essential ResponsibilitiesRelease ownership and execution across major autonomy releases, incremental/performance releases, and hotfix/safety patchesManage branching strategy, versioning, and release cut processesDrive release readiness and go/no-go decisions in partnership with cross-functional teamsDesign, build, and maintain internal tooling to support:Release readiness dashboards and automated health checksSimulation corpus integration and regression trackingRelease metrics collection, reporting, and visualizationAutomated validation signal aggregation across sim, HIL, and on-road testingInvestigate and resolve complex issues arising from software/hardware interactions, distributed systems behavior, and on-vehicle vs. simulation discrepanciesDevelop working understanding of sensor stack, middleware, autonomy stack, compute platforms, networking, and vehicle configurationsEnforce stage-gated release framework: Feature Complete Code Freeze Validation Release CandidateIntegrate and interpret validation signals including simulation corpus results, regression testing, and vehicle testingEnsure safety-critical issues are identified, tracked, and gated appropriatelyIdentify opportunities to improve system robustness, performance, and scalability — and build tooling to measure and track improvementsSupport autonomy engineers in designing and integrating their components with the full May systemContribute to and help maintain the team's knowledge base, runbooks, and release documentationSkills and AbilitiesStrong analytical and systems-thinking skills — comfortable reasoning about complex, multi-component systemsProficient in Python for scripting, automation, and tool developmentFamiliarity with data pipelines, metrics collection, and visualization tools (e.g. Plotly Dash, Tableau, AWS QuickSight, or similar)Ability to read and interpret logs, telemetry, and system health signals to identify root causeComfort working across hardware and software boundariesStrong written and verbal communication — able to translate technical findings into clear release decisionsAbility to work cross-functionally without direct authorityEagerness to continuously learn new systems, tools, and workflowsQualifications and ExperienceBachelor's degree in Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, Robotics, or a related technical field — or equivalent practical experience2–4 years of relevant experience in software engineering, release engineering, systems engineering, or a related disciplineProficiency in Python; comfort with Bash scripting and Linux environmentsBasic to intermediate experience with SQL and/or data queryingFamiliarity with version control systems (Git) and branching strategiesStrong troubleshooting instincts and attention to detailNice to HaveExperience with autonomous vehicle or robotics systemsFamiliarity with CI/CD pipelines and release automationExposure to simulation frameworks or hardware-in-the-loop testingBasic C/C++ reading ability for debugging and code analysisExperience building internal tools or dashboards for engineering teamsPhysical RequirementsStandard office working conditions which includes but is not limited to:Prolonged sittingProlonged standingProlonged computer useTravel required? - No: 0%Benefits and PerksComprehensive healthcare suite including medical, dental, vision, life, and disability plans.
