Institutional Overview

Capitol Technology University is a career-focused university located in Laurel, Maryland, between Baltimore and Washington, D.C. It is a fully-accredited non-profit private university that was started in 1927 by a Navy veteran to teach students how to build radios. The University offers unique commitments to on-campus students that include a salary guarantee and a Chargers Assistance Program that helps students pay back their loans if they do not find full-time work within 90 days of graduation.

Position Summary

The successful candidate will be passionate about working directly with Master’s and Doctoral students to prepare them for the demands of their Master’s thesis or Doctoral dissertation research and assist dissertation chairs in mentoring their students on implementing rigorous academic research studies. The individual will be a dynamic, visionary educator with innovative ideas for interdisciplinary approaches to education, experience teaching in multiple modalities, and the ability to motivate student excellence. Faculty dedicate 60% of their time to teaching and 40% of their time to service. Teaching includes course preparation, instruction, thesis/dissertation chairing, learning assessment, and participation in course and curriculum review. Service includes co-curricular activities which enhance and enrich the student experience and/or contribute to new student recruitment, including oversight of research courses, resources, and processes. Service also includes membership on the Academic Review Board and Institutional Review Board. Faculty may participate in open houses, participate in outreach (Cyber Saturdays, STEM Challenge, Capitol Connect, etc.), direct individualized contact with prospective students, and other engagement activities.

This is a full-time exempt on-campus position on our beautiful 52-acre campus in Laurel, MD, on the Baltimore Washington parkway.

Responsibilities: Teaching

• Instruct students in the research-related courses in the Master’s and Doctoral programs. Including: qualitative and/or quantitative methodologies, thesis/dissertation processes, empirical research design, and APA style formatting of the thesis/dissertation.
• Assigned to oversee mentored methodological courses within the thesis/dissertation process in the Master’s and Doctoral programs.
• Maintain high visibility for research students, including but not limited to; regular office hours, responding to students' emails and voice mails in a timely fashion, supporting co-curricular activities, supporting enrollment events (Open Houses, STEM Challenge, etc.…), serving on committees, mentoring and advising students on academic and publication development.
• Manage classrooms in person, via Zoom, and within the LMS including preparing syllabi, assignments, activities, grading, preparing assessment activities, etc.
• Respond to student emails within 2 business days of receipt.
• Respond to student submissions within 5 business days with substantive feedback.
• Maintain professional competencies in research, a subject area provided in the Graduate School, and currency in instructional methodologies through professional associations and professional development.
• Ability to teach in a multimodal environment, on campus, simultaneous instruction (streaming via Zoom while teaching in a classroom) and Live Online (streaming via Zoom) and use LMS (Canvas). Interest in developing understanding of and participation in asynchronous instruction.
• Support student success initiatives by making timely referrals to the advising team.
• Effectively use Office365, Canvas (Learn@), Zoom (Capitol Live), and Student Information System interfaces.

Responsibilities: Service

• Support educational effectiveness activities, such as course learning assessment and program level assessment review.
• Serve as a permanent member of the Academic Review Board (ARB) and/or the Institutional Review Board (IRB).
• Support accreditation activities of the university.
• Provide mentorship to dissertation chairs on research techniques and tools needed to ensure rigorous student research studies.
• Support enriching co-curricular student experiences including the advising and mentoring of students, participating in activities aligned with the curriculum, such as guest speakers, student research, communicating with students within specified degree programs regularly, etc.
• Support the recruitment of new Master’s and Doctoral students including: participating in Open House activities, assisting in the development of relationships and articulation agreements with research partners, developing and maintaining a professional image on social media (including LinkedIn, etc.), developing relationships with appropriate professional organizations, participating in special events (on campus or virtual) focused on research, creating and sharing content online (blogs, webinars, video clips, etc.) focused on research and subject areas within the Graduate School.
• Perform other tasks as assigned by the Vice President for Academic Affairs.

Qualifications

• Doctoral degree from an accredited institution of higher learning in a closely aligned field relevant to the subject areas provided within the Graduate School.
• Must be able to work in the U.S. without sponsorship as the college is unable to provide sponsorship.
• Extensive knowledge of subject matter and relevant topics and issues in the research discipline, including, but not limited to, qualitative and/or quantitative methodologies, statistical testing, data analysis techniques, understanding of relevant analysis software, and in-depth understanding of the ethical principles of research. This can be demonstrated through at least five years of documented research activities and relevant research publications within the last 10 years.
• Knowledge of effective instructional techniques and innovative modes of course delivery adaptable to a variety of learning styles.
• Understanding of the current American Psychological Association (APA) formatting guidelines.
• Teaching experience of five years or more, to include at least two years teaching and/or chairing dissertations at the doctoral level.
• Excellent communication skills, and the ability to work with faculty, students, and industry partners on various projects.
• Ability to master the use of the technology platforms used to support learning and administration of the University including: Office365, Canvas (Learn@), Zoom (Capitol Live), and Student Information System interfaces.

Salary Range

The salary for this position typically ranges from $85,000 to $95,000 annually, depending on experience and qualifications.
