Mechanic

$34 - $48 per hour

Rain Shadow Consulting

Rain Shadow relies on a functional and diverse fleet of trucks and equipment to safely and efficiently serve our clients across the San Juan Islands. We are seeking a skilled, self-starting mechanic to maintain, quickly diagnose and prioritize repairs, and optimize our fleet of vehicles, trailers, and tree-care equipment. This role is ideal for someone who thrives in a mix of shop work, field repairs, creative problem-solving, and independent decision-making. Because of the unique logistics of island operations, adaptability and resourcefulness are essential. This is a part-time position with opportunity to become full-time.

Based on Orcas Island, Washington, Rain Shadow Consulting is a dynamic and growing company that has been providing professional, high-quality tree care, forestry, consulting, and ecological restoration services in San Juan County since 2005. We work with a diverse range of clients from individual homeowners to our regional utility company to non-profit organizations managing large preserves for conservation and rare species restoration. Our sister company, Orcas Biomass, produces and sells quality lumber and mulch products from recycled woody material. Description

Qualifications
  • Strong diagnostic and repair abilities for diesel engines, small engines (chainsaws), hydraulic systems, and vehicle electrical systems.
  • Preventative maintenance proficiency including fluids & filters, brake systems, and engine maintenance.
  • Must maintain a clean and organized work environment.
  • Strong time management and prioritization abilities.
  • Adaptability and comfort working in remote or uncertain conditions.
  • Comfort level with computers, and computer-based diagnostics.
  • CDL class A or B strongly preferred.
  • Experience operating heavy equipment preferred.
  • WA Boaters license a plus.
Key Responsibilities
  • Perform periodic inspections on all equipment and vehicles.
  • Track maintenance tasks, schedules, and costs using fleet management software.
  • Diagnose and repair breakdowns efficiently.
  • Complete field repairs as needed, including travel to outer islands and remote job sites.
  • Advise and assist in sourcing and procuring new vehicles/equipment.
  • Provide quarterly lifecycle and fleet condition reports using fleet management tools.
  • Maintain and follow a shop budget.
  • Maintain proper registration for all vehicles and equipment.
  • Maintain an organized, clean, safe, and efficient shop environment.
  • Organize and maintain tools, consumables, and parts inventories.
  • Provide training for employees in basic routine maintenance and troubleshooting.
  • Ensure proper use of fleet management software and provide initial and ongoing training to employees.
Pay and Benefits
  • $34-48+/hour DOE
  • Health/dental/vision/life insurance, 401k with 6% company match, 2 weeks Vacation/Sick PTO, paid holidays, paid training, and paid travel
