The Surgical Technician assists during operative and invasive procedures in the surgical center, ensures the operating suite is prepared for each procedure, monitors PAR level of instruments and supplies, assists with cleaning and sterilizing instruments, participates in departmental staff meetings and performance improvement activities. Responsibilities Prepare the room promptly with all anticipated instruments, sutures, supplies and equipment for each surgical procedure. Demonstrate competence in the care of specimens and accurately handle them at all times. Assist in positioning, prepping and draping patients for surgical procedures. Set up, scrub and prepare procedures at least 30 minutes prior to scheduled time, unless otherwise directed by Circulating RN or Team Leader. Perform services requiring technical or manual skills under the direction of Circulation RN. Maintain an orderly and sterile instrument table for efficiency, following department standard set up. Accurately complete operating room counts (instruments, sponges, needles) and report any discrepancies to the Circulation RN and surgeon, correcting immediately if needed. Carry out medical/surgical asepsis during treatment/procedures and use aseptic technique when opening sterile supplies and setting up procedures. Maintain a safe environment for patients, co‑workers and self, per ASC policies and procedures. Check all equipment and instruments prior to each procedure to ensure proper functioning. Protect patients’ sensitivities and right to privacy and closely observe patients with minimal disturbance. Perform all aspects of patient care in an environment that optimizes patient safety and reduces the likelihood of medical/health‑care errors, including proper patient identification and surgical site verification. Anticipate the needs of the surgeon during the intraoperative phase. Clean and prepare rooms between procedures and after the last case; restock supplies when necessary and organize effectively for end‑of‑case cleanup. Be fully responsible for the care of instruments and equipment during the intra/postoperative phase, including cleaning and processing of instruments. Follow written procedures for steam sterilization and understand the responsibilities for chemical and biological monitoring. Consult with the team when in doubt or unfamiliar with equipment or procedure. Collaborate regularly with other nursing team members to maintain equipment and supplies for surgical procedures. Interact professionally with patients and families. Provide patients with explanations and verbal reassurances, as necessary. Notify the appropriate licensed professional when a patient complains of pain. Adapt procedures to meet the individual needs of adult patients for treatment. Treat patients and their families with respect and dignity, identifying and addressing psychosocial, cultural, ethnic and religious/spiritual needs. Interpret patients’ status data to identify age‑specific needs and provide appropriate care for the correct patient group. Establish and maintain effective communication and a good working relationship with coworkers for the benefit of the patient. Make decisions reflecting knowledge of facts and good judgment within the operating room technician scope of practice. Make decisions reflecting knowledge of the assigned case and instruments or trays to be pulled for the procedure. Qualifications Minimum high school diploma or equivalent. Current BCLS certification and must maintain BLS certification. Strong communication and interpersonal skills. Proficiency in EMR and computer literacy. Ability to read and communicate effectively in English. Additional languages preferred. Create and provide a positive, accountable, and inspired work environment.
