Assistant or Associate Professor of Music - Trumpet Job no: 510429 Position type: Full‑time 9‑month Department: 052700 – Department of Music Location: Main Campus – Starkville, MS Categories: Faculty Position Open Date: May 11 2026 Position Function The Department of Music seeks an energetic and collaborative faculty member to build and lead a dynamic applied trumpet studio. The successful candidate will teach applied trumpet, coach chamber ensembles, and contribute to the department’s growth in curriculum and community engagement. Essential Duties and Responsibilities Teach a 3.3 course load in studio trumpet and other brass‑related courses. Maintain a clear research agenda, including publications, presentations, professional performances, and potential external funding. Direct the MSU Trumpet Consort and coach student chamber ensembles. Assume secondary teaching responsibilities based on departmental needs and candidate expertise. Participate in university, college, and department committees, service, and recruiting activities. Perform with faculty chamber ensembles. Minimum Qualifications Doctorate in music or a related field, completed by the time of appointment. Appropriate performance experience on trumpet. Successful experience teaching studio trumpet. Preferred Qualifications Collaborative work in diverse academic and community settings. Experience recruiting and maintaining a thriving trumpet studio. Alignment of academic and professional characteristics with the missions of the university, college, and department. Professional performance experience. University teaching experience. Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Teaching trumpet with a collaborative approach to chamber music coaching and a robust research agenda. Working Conditions and Physical Effort No unusual physical requirements. Work is performed in a comfortable indoor facility.
