Refuge is an Emmy Award‑winning visual effects studio based in Portland. A self‑styled “Monster Shop,” we specialize in the creation of creatures, FX, and world‑building that brings shows to life. Refuge is home to a team of skilled artists and producers committed to breakthrough work in visual effects. The Role At Refuge, the Assistant VFX Editor plays a key role maintaining an efficient delivery process while working within the established pipeline. They help prepare client turnovers and organize media so artists can begin work quickly and accurately. This role supports Compositing Supervisors and Production team by ingesting and validating production materials, preparing artist‑ready shot packages, maintaining project edits and sequence information, and helping ensure editorial materials remain organized throughout production. The ideal candidate is highly organized, detail‑oriented, and comfortable working with repetitive, process‑driven tasks while identifying opportunities to improve workflows. Previous VFX editorial experience is a plus but not required. We are willing to train the right person — curiosity, reliability, attention to detail, and a willingness to learn are more important than prior experience with specific tools or workflows. Responsibilities Turnovers & Shot Preparation Receive and organize client turnover packages Execute established workflows using internal tools and checklists Prepare artist‑ready materials for production teams Export image sequences, reference QuickTimes, LUTs, and supporting files Organize plates into shot folders and prepare media for artists Media Verification & Quality Control Verify incoming materials are complete and properly organized Confirm reference QuickTimes, footage plates, LUTs, naming conventions, and supporting turnover files are complete and accurate Perform quality‑control checks before materials are handed off to artists Identify inconsistencies in incoming materials and elevate unusual situations to Supervisors for guidance Editorial Support Maintain edit references and ensure Production can view sequences in context with the latest versions Help track editorial changes and keep client materials synchronized and organized Support Production with shot tracking and data management Work closely with Production teams and department leads Contribute to a collaborative and organized production environment Escalate technical, editorial, or color‑related issues when necessary Help maintain consistency across projects What We’re Looking For Excellent attention to detail and organizational skills Interest in visual effects and post‑production Ability to follow established processes and checklists Ability to manage multiple priorities in a fast‑paced environment Comfortable asking questions and escalating issues when needed Comfortable with repetitive and process‑oriented work Preferred Experience ShotGrid/Flow or similar production tracking software Experience with image sequences and media management Familiarity with EXR workflows, LUTs, or color pipelines Experience in VFX, animation, editorial, or post‑production environments We Value Potential We don’t expect candidates to know everything on day one.
