Position specifics The Penn State University Police and Public Safety Department protects and serves more than 100,000 students, employees, and visitors at 22 campuses. We are searching for Act 120 certified police officers who hold the values of integrity, respect, responsibility, discovery, excellence, and community. Police officers carry out the functions of protection of life and property, preservation of peace and good order, enforcement of laws and university policies, public safety, investigative work, and related duties. Day‑to‑day tasks include patrol, education, inspection, deterrence, and enforcement of national, federal, state, and local laws. Responsibilities Responsibilities include preventing illegal or unsafe activity through patrol, education, inspection, and enforcement. Officers are expected to enforce laws, investigate, apprehend, and prosecute violators and to conduct investigations using information technology, software, surveillance equipment, and social media. Qualifications Skills to enhance public respect for law enforcement and the university with courteous, devoted, and ethical service Capacity to work cooperatively with faculty, staff, students, and outside agencies Ability to provide effective, honest, and credible testimony at court hearings Outstanding customer service orientation; excellent verbal and written communication; analysis, judgment, ethical decision‑making, and organizational skills Ability to work with a wide variety of diverse cultures and backgrounds Respect for the constitutional rights of all people to liberty, equality, and justice Ability to uphold an excellent standard of conduct, abiding by laws, regulations, and policies Education and certification Minimum requirement: high school diploma or equivalent. Applicants must be Act 120 certified, currently enrolled in the Pennsylvania MPOETC Act 120 police academy, or able to obtain certification during hiring. Candidates must be U.S. citizens, at least 21 years old, and possess a valid driver’s license. Contract expires June 30, 2028.
