About the Position

There are 29 beds in the unit. The nurse to patient ratios are 1:4 during the day and 1:6 during the night. Common diagnoses include abdominal surgeries, ear/nose/throat surgeries, complex wounds, and general medical issues. RNs are required to titrate drips including heparin and, infrequently, insulin, diltiazem, amiodarone, and nitroglycerin. Telemetry/monitor techs are present on the unit; RNs are not required to read telemetry strips as techs monitor and report any concerns. Charge nurse takes a smaller assignment and agency staff are not required to work in a charge role. Nurse aides are available with ratios of 1:8 during the day and 1:14 at night. Equipment used includes CPAP, BiPAP, vapotherm, and occasional tracheostomies, but there are no vents on the unit. There is no guarantee of block scheduling, but efforts will be made to accommodate it, especially for night shifts. Every other weekend and holiday commitment is required. No call or standby requirement exists. Floating to other med/surg units may occur if the unit is overstaffed. Scrubs of any color are allowed. All clinicians must clock in and out at the facility. This position requires participation in the electronic health record system. The unit provides 12 hours of computer training and 12 hours of shadowing for orientation.
