Description Patient Care Associate MSH GP9C Med/Surg FT Nights EOW As an integral part of the clinical care team, the Patient Care Associate is responsible for patient care and support activities promoting patient focused care within the Specialty Service. The Patient Care Associate supports the registered nurse in patient care activities, such as assisting patients with activities of daily living, collecting specimens and performing procedures; maintaining a safe, clean environment; and other duties as needed. Responsibilities Demonstrate the ability to perform clinical, technical, service and administrative tasks. Provide care based on physical, psychosocial, educational, safety and related criteria appropriate to the age of the patients served. Perform and record patient vital signs (blood pressure, pulse, temperature, respirations) and document intake and output. Obtain patient pain ratings as a fifth vital sign (except Pediatrics). Perform clinical procedures including specimen collection (blood glucose, venipuncture, EKG), application of compression devices, post‑mortem care, and maintenance of skin integrity. Set up for selected procedures and assist RN’s accordingly. Assist patients with activities of daily living (feeding, bathing, toileting, ambulation, mobilization). Assist with dietary functions, including delivery and collection of patient trays, menu assistance, supplementation, and reporting eating patterns to RN/Dietitian. Maintain a safe, clean and functional environment, including ensuring patient comfort and room maintenance. Perform on‑to‑one or close observation status of patients (safety, elopement risk, suicide prevention). Maintain isolation status for patients under RN direction according to established procedures. Conduct hourly care checks/rounding on patients with emphasis on toileting needs, comfort, positioning and pain awareness. Use Vocera system/Mount Sinai phone according to sign‑in/sign‑out protocol where activated. Perform other duties as assigned, including generating reports. Promote an environment that is sensitive to cultural diversity and values each patient’s unique needs. Greet visitors and answer telephones promptly and courteously; escort visitors as necessary. Answer patient call system and refer calls to appropriate staff. Transport patients to stretchers or wheelchairs as required. Assist with emergency clean‑up and transport, discharge bed making, specimen transport, and updates to communication board/discharge log. Assemble medical records and update admission/transfer/discharge systems and processes. Maintain supplies and care of equipment. Participate in department performance improvement activities, maintain patient/employee confidentiality, and observe compliance policies. Participate in development of other staff members and meet regulatory, licensure and annual health assessment requirements. Identify learning strengths and needs; utilize learning resources. Demonstrate professional, courteous and respectful attitude in dealing with patients, families and staff. Qualifications High School Diploma (graduate or equivalent). Certificate of completion of a medical assistant/patient care assistant program or equivalent with skills in venipuncture and EKG. Interpersonal skills to communicate and collaborate effectively with other members of the service. Documentation of Medical Assistant/Patient Care Associate training. Three to nine months of healthcare experience preferred. Ability to set priorities, problem‑solve, use proper judgement and be flexible. Proficient oral and written communication in English. Physical stamina and manual dexterity to perform a variety of tasks and skills in the area of assignment. American Heart Association Heartsaver or BLS Certification. Compensation The Mount Sinai Health System (MSHS) provides salary ranges that comply with the New York City Law on Salary Transparency in Job Advertisements.
