Music Adjunct Instructor – Applied Low Brass (TEMPORARY) Diablo Valley College is seeking an adjunct faculty member to provide one‑on‑one applied music instruction in the low brass studio—trombone, euphonium, and tuba—using both classical and jazz pedagogies. Successful candidates will teach DVC music majors weekly or bi‑weekly lessons that correspond to a freshman‑to‑sophomore applied sequence, preparing students for junior‑standing college transfer after two years (four semesters). Adjuncts who are approved may also be considered for substitute teaching. Responsibilities Teach primary low‑brass instrument technique with contemporary best practices. Train students to perform music with rhythmic, melodic, harmonic, and stylistic accuracy. Develop music literacy across eras, styles, and genres. Select appropriate repertoire for solo performance. Guide students through improvised solos centered on chord‑progression analysis. Prepare students for public performances, including practice, memorization, and accompaniment coordination. Assist students with transfer‑institution auditions. Provide individualized instruction in accordance with curriculum and course outlines. Maintain a learning environment that encourages discussion and critical thinking. Document and evaluate student progress and grades. Attend outside‑class meetings as needed. Maintain professional conduct, ethics, and up‑to‑date subject‑matter knowledge. Keep accurate academic records and fulfill other professional duties. Desired Qualifications Master’s degree in music or Bachelor’s in music with a Master’s in humanities, or an equivalent qualification. Advanced performance experience on low‑brass instruments (trombone, euphonium, tuba) in both classical and jazz contexts. Teaching experience with low‑brass students, including recruiting and retaining a diverse student studio. Familiarity with pedagogical methods for students of varied academic, socio‑economic, ethnic, cultural backgrounds, as well as disabilities and gender/sexual diversity. Commitment to inclusive, equitable educational practices. Education and Experience Master’s in music, or Bachelor’s in music plus Master’s in humanities, or the equivalent. Doctoral degree (Ph.D.) is considered equivalent to a Master’s. Equivalency form required if degree titles do not match exactly. Employment Benefits Adjunct faculty pay rate: $77.87–$128.97 per hour (up to $151.16). Membership in State Teachers Retirement System (STRS). District‑paid benefits (employee contributes 6%): medical (Anthem Blue Cross or Kaiser), dental and vision, flexible spending plan, life and long‑term disability insurance, employee assistance program, deferred compensation (403(b)/457), sabbatical leave. Additional benefits may be available for eligible faculty, including travel assistance, retiree benefits, and discounts on health memberships.
