Summary Job Title: Supervisory Medical Instrument Technologist (Diagnostic Ultrasound) Location: OKC VAMC The incumbent has overall responsibility for the coordination and performance of procedures in the Radiology Ultrasound Section. Job Responsibilities Coordinate and perform diagnostic ultrasound procedures in the Radiology Ultrasound Section. Develop and manage staff schedules, including breaks, duty rotation, on‑call, and holiday work schedules. Supervise medical instrument technologists, assign work, evaluate performance, conduct disciplinary actions as needed, and recommend awards or advancements. Coordinate and approve leave requests to maintain optimal staffing. Develop and manage the department budget, including equipment acquisition and maintenance. Prepare reports and presentations on department performance and activities for senior management. Conduct ultrasound studies, record and process images, and prepare orders and images for radiologist interpretation. Assist in invasive procedures in a surgical setting, including needle localization for biopsies. Maintain high standards of image quality and patient care; ensure compliance with regulatory requirements (Joint Commission, OSHA, etc.). Serve as consultant to radiology leadership, providing guidance on new or updated guidelines and regulations. Participate as an instructor in the facility's clinical training program. Basic Requirements United States Citizenship: Non‑citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy. Education: No specific educational requirements for this position. Licensure or Certification: Not required for this occupation, but strongly desirable at GS‑6 or above. Specific Certifications: When applicable, certifications appropriate to the specialty are identified in the standard under "Titles and Certification/Registrations". Basic and Advanced Cardiac Life Support certifications are desirable. English Language Proficiency: Candidate must be proficient in spoken and written English. Grade Determinations: Candidates must meet grade‑specific criteria as described in the applicable headings. Experience: Supervisory Medical Instrument Technician (Diagnostic Ultrasound) – GS‑10 Experience. At least 1 year of experience comparable to the next lower grade level, directly related to the duties of the position. Technical KSAs: Advanced knowledge of complex and non‑standard treatment and examination procedures and techniques; planning and establishing integrated treatment programs; evaluating new products and equipment; managing fiscal matters; providing supervisory duties such as assignment of work, performance evaluation, selection of staff, and recommendation of awards. Preferred Experience: Registration by the American Registry of Diagnostic Medical Sonographers (ARDMS) and Basic Cardiac Life Support (BCLS) certifications are desirable. Physical Requirements Must be able to perform all activities of the position without restriction. Heavy lifting (45 lbs and over), moderate carrying (15‑44 lbs), straight pulling (up to 0.5 hour), pushing (0.5 hour), reaching above shoulder, use of fingers and both hands, walking (up to 4 hours), standing (up to 4 hours), repeated bending (up to 4 hours), and both legs required; rapid mental and muscular coordination simultaneously. Vision: near vision correctable to 13/16, far vision correctable to 20/20 in one eye and 20/40 in the other; depth perception, color discrimination, hearing without aid. Other: rotate trunk side to side, tactile sensations (hot/cold), rotate forearms, sit for 50+ minutes, no pacemaker, constant noise environment, unusual fatigue factors (on‑call requirement), working closely with others or alone, protracted or irregular hours, exposure to magnetic fields/radio waves. Benefits and Working Conditions Work Schedule: Monday – Friday, 8:00 a.m. – 4:30 p.m. Permanent Change of Station not authorized. Pay: Competitive salary with regular increases. Paid Time Off: 37–50 days annually (13–26 days leave, 13 days sick leave, 11 paid federal holidays). Parental leave: up to 12 weeks after 12 months employment. Child care subsidy: available to full‑time employees with family income below $144,000. Retirement: Traditional federal pension (5 years vesting) and federal 401(k) with up to 5% contribution.
