Job Description

The HVAC Controls Technician installs, programs, and services building automation and control systems for commercial, industrial, hospital, and data center facilities. This role combines project-based installation work with occasional service calls, requiring strong technical expertise in HVAC controls, automation, and programming, as well as the ability to communicate clearly with customers about issues, solutions, and completed work.

Responsibilities

• Perform project-based installations of building control systems for commercial, industrial, hospital, and data center environments.
• Install, configure, and commission HVAC controls, building automation systems, and related mechanical and electrical components.
• Program HVAC control systems, including building automation platforms such as Tridium Niagara and Distech, to meet project specifications and customer requirements.
• Conduct service calls as needed, including traveling to customer sites in a company vehicle.
• Communicate with customers to understand reported issues, gather relevant information, and explain technical findings in clear, non-technical language.
• Troubleshoot building control systems, HVAC equipment, and automation components to identify root causes of performance or operational problems.
• Perform repairs and adjustments on control systems and related equipment to restore proper operation and optimize performance.
• Document work performed, including programming changes, repairs, and system adjustments, and review completed tasks with customers.
• Collaborate with project teams and other trades on construction and installation projects to ensure coordinated and timely completion of work.
• Adhere to safety protocols and best practices when working with mechanical, electrical, and automation systems in diverse facility types.
• Maintain tools, test equipment, and company vehicle in good working order and ensure readiness for daily field assignments.

Essential Skills

• Minimum of 3 years of experience in HVAC controls installation and service, specifically focused on building controls installation and programming.
• Hands-on experience with building automation and building systems, including installation, configuration, and commissioning.
• Proficiency in programming HVAC control systems, particularly Tridium Niagara and Distech platforms.
• Strong understanding of HVAC equipment, mechanical systems, and electrical systems as they relate to building controls and automation.
• Ability to perform installation work in construction environments, including mounting, wiring, and integrating control devices and panels.
• Solid troubleshooting skills for automation systems, PLC-based controls, and building management systems.
• Capability to diagnose and repair issues in HVAC controls and building automation systems in commercial, industrial, hospital, and data center settings.
• Valid driver’s license and ability to drive a company vehicle to various job sites.
• Effective verbal communication skills to interact with customers, understand their concerns, and explain recommended solutions and completed work.
• Ability to work safely and independently in diverse facility environments with mechanical and electrical equipment.

Additional Skills & Qualifications

• Experience with additional controls and building automation software platforms beyond Tridium Niagara and Distech.
• Experience in PLC programming and integration with building automation or HVAC control systems.
• Familiarity with EPA Universal certification and its application to HVAC work.
• Exposure to automation technologies and building systems used in commercial, industrial, hospital, and data center facilities.
• Experience working on construction projects involving installation of mechanical, electrical, and control systems.
• Strong organizational skills to manage multiple projects and service calls effectively.
• Ability to read and interpret technical documentation, wiring diagrams, and control schematics.
• Comfort working in a team-oriented environment while also managing individual responsibilities in the field.

Work Environment

Work takes place in a variety of commercial, industrial, hospital, and data center settings, providing exposure to diverse building systems and technologies. The role is field-based, with travel to customer sites using a company vehicle for both project installations and service calls. You will regularly work around mechanical and electrical equipment, building automation hardware, and control panels in active facilities and construction environments. The position requires adherence to safety standards appropriate for these settings, including the use of proper personal protective equipment and professional attire suitable for technical field work.

This is a Permanent position based out of Ferndale, MI.

The pay range for this position is $62400.00 - $104000.00/yr.
