Animal Research Technician

Position Summary We have an exciting opportunity to join our team as an Animal Research Technician. Responsible for participating in the cleaning and maintenance of animal quarters. Provides routine care of research animals. Monitors and controls environmental conditions. Maintains a variety of records (log of room activities). Monitors supplies for specific animal quarters. Assists with relocation of facility equipment and supplies. Assists in ensuring compliance with regulatory requirements related to care of laboratory animals. Job Responsibilities CLEANING: Participate in the cleaning and maintenance of animal quarters. Rotate animal cages and racks for cleaning following established schedule. Sweep and mop animal quarters thoroughly. Disinfect walls and sanitize animal quarters using appropriate compounds and techniques. Perform additional cleaning of area as required, or upon request. Required to change up to and including a minimum of 300 cages per day. ANIMAL CARE: Provide routine care of research animals. Feed animals in assigned areas following established schedule. Provide adequate food, bedding, enrichment devices and water as required. Check animals daily to identify sick animals. Notify veterinary technician of any unusual conditions. Weigh animals as required. Assist veterinary technician by restraining animals for minor procedures. Administer medications (pills, injections) on weekends and as instructed. Receive, check in animals and materials and deliver to correct locations. Perform routine weekend and holiday overtime as scheduled. ENVIRONMENTAL CONDITIONS: Monitor and control environmental conditions. Periodically check temperature, ventilation and lighting in animal rooms and related areas. Adjust conditions as required. Notify supervisor of problems with related equipment (heating/air conditioning systems, etc.). RECORDKEEPING: Maintain a variety of records (log of room activities). Record information accurately and promptly. Write and communicate data to all NYULMC staff on the appropriate level. Complete recordkeeping in accordance with outlined procedures. Keep records organized and up-to-date. INVENTORY CONTROL: Monitor supplies for specific animal quarters. Keep adequate supplies by monitoring levels on an ongoing basis. Check availability of supplies and restock all areas as required. Advise supervisor of shortages in a timely manner. EQUIPMENT/SUPPLIES: Assist with relocation of facility equipment and supplies. Transport facility equipment and supplies to new locations as instructed. Complete assignments timely. Report delays or problems to supervisor. Order and maintain an inventory of supplies. Ensure adequate levels of room supplies are available on an ongoing basis. REGULATORY COMPLIANCE: Assist in ensuring compliance with regulatory requirements related to care of laboratory animals. Maintain awareness of regulatory requirements applicable to responsibilities. Follow departmental procedures in order to implement Enrichment Program for all laboratory animals. Ensure necessary documentation is maintained up-to-date and thorough. Approved drivers may be assigned to operate the supply van or other vehicle in furtherance of the above referenced responsibilities. Perform other duties as assigned. Minimum Qualifications To qualify you must have a High school diploma or equivalent and two years experience in an animal research facility. Able to speak and write fluent English. AALAS certification at the Assistant Laboratory Animal Technician (ALAT) level required. A 2 year college degree in an animal or biological sciences course of study may substitute for ALAT. Current and continued enrollment in such a program may substitute for the actual degree. Applicant will be expected to achieve at least ALAT certification within one year of hire for continued employment. Three years of documented animal husbandry experience may substitute for ALAT. Applicant will be expected to achieve at least ALAT certification within one year of hire for continued employment. Required Licenses Asst Lab Animal Technician Preferred Qualifications Approved drivers must have a valid NYS Drivers License, clean driving record. Prior experience with truck and/or van driving of materials in shipping, receiving, and distribution preferred.
