What You Will Do Packaging Specialist 1 – Salary: $66,100-$103,600. Join our team! You will support the Experimental Device Engineering and Assembly Group (V‑5) at Los Alamos National Laboratory (LANL). As a Packaging Specialist 1, you will assist senior personnel in scheduling, packaging, and transporting classified matter, high explosives, hazardous materials, and test assemblies, while learning to safely handle and ship high‑explosive equipment. Packaging Specialist 2 – Salary: $72,800-$115,400. In addition to the responsibilities of a Packaging Specialist 1, a Packaging Specialist 2 will further manage schedules and logistics for classified and hazardous items and, after training, become a certified High‑Explosive handler, CDL driver with hazmat endorsement, and LANL Authorized Shipper for all hazard classes. All successful candidates will be required to qualify for and participate in the Human Reliability Program (HRP). What You Need Minimum Job Requirements Developing knowledge or skills working with any or all of the following: Nuclear Material, Explosives, Radiological Material, other Hazardous Material, and/or Classified Matter. Developing knowledge or skills with coordination, packaging, transportation, and storage of hazardous items to become an authorized shipper in compliance with federal, state, and local regulations. Developing knowledge to contribute to the development and implementation of policies, procedures, systems, and/or forms related to the transportation of Explosives, other Hazardous Material, and/or Classified Matter. Some working knowledge of safety and security compliance, including the ability to stop work if unsafe or compromises security. Some experience supporting customers using written and oral communication skills with tact, diplomacy, discretion, and attention to detail. Some experience fostering a mutually respectful and inclusive work environment free from discrimination and harassment. Education / Experience (Lower Level) Position requires a minimum of 2 years related experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience. Education / Experience (Higher Level) Position requires an Associate’s Degree and 5 years of related experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience directly related to the occupation. Desired Qualifications Active DOE Q clearance Hands‑on experience or familiarity with LANL FootPrints, PDMLink, and/or Atlas systems High Explosives Handler Qualification High Explosives Transporter Qualification Working knowledge of P101‑8, Explosives Safety, and DOE Standard 1212.2012 (Formerly the DOE Explosives Safety Manual) Forklift license HMPT Training (Hazardous Material Packaging and/or classified packaging and Transportation) Experience in high‑hazard operations (HE/rad) Commercial Drivers License with Hazmat endorsement LANL Authorized Shipper in all hazard classes and divisions Rad Worker II certification High Explosives Transporter Essential Job Functions (with or without reasonable accommodation) Vision: Color discrimination, peripheral vision, depth perception, binocular vision, reading, distance vision, ability to speak, discriminate speech, hear high‑pitched sounds, smell. Work Environment General: Outdoors, confined space, at heights, cold environment, working alone, off‑shift/rotating schedule, very hot (>100 °F), hot climate (90‑100 °F), heavy equipment operation, wide ambient temperature range, wet or humid, dry, domestic travel, motor vehicle operation. Specific: noisy environment, unusual lighting, near non‑ionizing radiation sources, weapons or explosives, protective clothing & environment. Protective gear: safety glasses or eye protection, hearing protection, gloves or hand protection, safety shoes or protective foot gear. Work Location Onsite at Los Alamos, NM. All work locations are at management discretion.
