Phlebotomist II
This Phlebotomist II position focuses on delivering high-quality specimen collection and exceptional patient care in a busy laboratory environment. You greet and prepare patients for blood draws and other specimen collections, perform venipuncture using appropriate techniques, ensure accurate labeling and processing of specimens, and maintain strict compliance with safety and regulatory standards. The role also involves updating patient information, handling insurance and billing details related to lab services, answering inquiries about test results, and supporting overall lab operations with a patient-first mindset.
Responsibilities
- Greet patients as they arrive at the laboratory and provide a professional, welcoming experience.
- Clearly and courteously explain the venipuncture and specimen collection process, including blood, urine, and fecal specimens as required.
- Perform blood draws using straight needles, butterfly needles, syringes, and other appropriate devices while following established procedures.
- Collect, store, and handle specimens in accordance with laboratory protocols and test requirements.
- Match laboratory requisition forms to specimen tubes, ensuring all orders are fully understood and correctly interpreted.
- Accurately label specimens, centrifuge, split, and freeze samples as required by specific test orders.
- Verify all test requisitions or computer-generated labels against the script to ensure 100% accuracy.
- Package specimens properly for transport and follow all protocols to maintain the integrity of the samples.
- Store specimen samples at the required temperature and place them in appropriate collection containers or tubes according to protocol.
- Follow detailed procedures for specimen handling and transport to comply with laboratory standards and regulations.
- Understand and comply with OSHA and DEP regulations and attend annual department trainings to stay current on safety and compliance requirements.
- Record maintenance data and perform decontamination tasks to support a clean, safe, and well-maintained laboratory environment.
- Update patient information accurately in laboratory systems and related records.
- Answer telephone calls, respond to inquiries, and read laboratory results as appropriate to support patients and healthcare providers.
- Prepare collection sites for venipuncture and other specimen collection procedures, ensuring proper sanitation and patient comfort.
- Handle insurance and billing information related to laboratory services in a timely and accurate manner.
- Process samples efficiently to meet turnaround times and quality standards in a fast-paced lab or hospital setting.
- Provide excellent customer service to all patients, demonstrating a patient-first mindset in every interaction.
- Collaborate with colleagues, take initiative, and contribute to a positive, hardworking team culture.
- Demonstrate reliability through consistent attendance and adherence to scheduled work hours.
Essential Skills
- At least 1 year of phlebotomy and venipuncture experience in a fast-paced laboratory or hospital setting.
- Proficiency in performing blood draws using straight needles, butterfly needles, syringes, and other standard phlebotomy equipment.
- Strong phlebotomy skills, including venipuncture and specimen collection for blood, urine, and fecal samples.
- Experience with blood culture collection and proper handling of specimens.
- Ability to accurately label, centrifuge, split, freeze, and store specimens according to test orders and protocols.
- Understanding of laboratory workflows and processes, including specimen processing and documentation.
- Previous customer service experience in any setting, with the ability to provide courteous, patient-focused support.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite for basic documentation, communication, and data entry tasks.
- Ability to interpret and follow physicians' orders and match requisition forms to specimen tubes correctly.
- Knowledge of OSHA and DEP regulations and willingness to comply with all safety and regulatory requirements.
- Strong attention to detail and commitment to 100% accuracy in labeling, requisition verification, and recordkeeping.
- Ability to take feedback well and demonstrate eagerness to learn and improve.

Work Environment
This role is based in a clinical laboratory setting at 2250 Northwest Flanders Street in Portland, Oregon. The schedule is Monday through Friday, 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., supporting a fast-paced environment that serves a steady flow of patients and healthcare providers. You work with standard phlebotomy and laboratory equipment, including straight needles, butterfly needles, syringes, centrifuges, and specimen storage systems. The workplace emphasizes strict adherence to OSHA and DEP regulations, annual safety and compliance trainings, and meticulous specimen handling protocols to maintain sample integrity. Pay and Benefits
The pay range for this position is $20.00 - $23.11/hr. Eligibility requirements apply to some benefits and may depend on your job classification and length of employment.
