Hazardous Materials Specialist II (Fire District)

Position Overview Hazardous Materials Specialists (HMS) II. Office of the Fire Marshal (OFM), San Bernardino County Fire Protection District. This role interprets and implements hazardous material laws and regulations while performing a variety of inspection and investigation assignments. The Hazardous Materials Division serves as the Certified Unified Program Agency (CUPA) for San Bernardino County, conducting compliance inspections for over 7000 regulated facilities that handle hazardous materials, generate or treat hazardous waste, or operate underground storage tanks. Key Responsibilities Interpret and enforce hazardous materials laws, regulations, and policies. Conduct inspections, investigations, and compliance reviews of regulated facilities. Develop and deliver educational outreach and enforcement procedures to minimize risk to human health and the environment. Maintain accurate records and reports, including use of CERS, EnvisionConnect or Accela software. Participate in Hazardous Materials Response Team (HMRT) operations as required. Minimum Qualifications Registered as an Environmental Health Specialist (REHS) with the State of California Department of Public Health. At least one year of experience as an REHS in California; or six months as an REHS plus six months as a Hazardous Materials Specialist or equivalent. Proficient in Microsoft Office. Knowledge of CERS, EnvisionConnect or Accela highly desirable. Valid California Class C driver's license and proof of automobile liability insurance. Ability to travel for job‑related functions and mileage reimbursement available. Additional Certifications and Training Position may require specific certifications; employees typically have six months to acquire required certifications. Potential opportunity to become a member of the Hazardous Materials Response Team (HMRT) requiring after‑hours emergency response rotation.
