GENERAL STATEMENT OF JOB Provides county staff and the public with clean, safe, attractive and comfortable facilities in which to engage in business or recreation. EXAMPLES OF WORK Uses electrical cleaning equipment (i.e., vacuum cleaners, shampoo machines, high-speed buffers). Uses chemicals and cleaners safely and productively according to instructions to ensure personal, public, and staff safety. Ensures facilities are available and secured according to schedule (i.e., locking doors and windows, turning off electrical units). Performs custodial tasks (i.e., emptying and cleaning waste receptacles; mopping, stripping, waxing, and buffing floors; washing windows; dusting furniture; cleaning vents, fans, walls; sanitizing restrooms, kitchen facilities). Responds to emergency situations (i.e., spills, broken windows, broken locks). Moves furniture and other equipment as necessary. Uses light electrical equipment and various hand tools, such as rakes, shovels and hammers. Performs routine maintenance on facility custodial equipment, such as changing vacuum cleaner belts and bags, and changing buffer machine pads. Cleans equipment and tools after use and maintains cleanliness and order in storage areas. Reports equipment malfunctions and facility maintenance needs. Monitors supplies and materials inventory; orders supplies and materials. Performs non-cleaning tasks in general facility maintenance (i.e., changing light bulbs, filling paper and soap dispensers, assisting in setting up for meeting and conferences). Performs grounds maintenance tasks (i.e., mowing, edging, trimming, planting, irrigation maintenance and repair). Assists with training of custodial staff as needed. Must be able to meet work schedule and attendance standards. Performs related duties as required. Minimum Qualifications High school diploma or GED preferred; supplemented by six (6) months of experience in performing custodial tasks, preferably in a commercial or similar institutional environment; or an equivalent combination of education, training and experience that provides the required knowledge, skills and abilities. Requires a valid driver license. Other Requirements Physical Requirements: Must be physically able to operate a variety of hand held and electrical equipment and tools including vacuum cleaners, strippers, waxers, etc. Must be able to exert 50 to 100 pounds of force occasionally, or in excess of 50 pounds of force frequently, or in excess of 20 pounds of force constantly to lift, carry, push, pull or otherwise move objects. Physical demands are in excess of sedentary work, i.e., standing and walking for prolonged periods of time. Tasks include considerable bending, stooping, climbing, etc., and working in confined spaces. Requires full range of body motion in manipulation of limbs and torso. Required to work from ladders and personnel-lifts for extended periods of time to complete certain tasks (i.e., cleaning windows and vents; changing light bulbs, etc.). May be subject to a significant degree of danger or risk due to the use of chemicals/toxic agents in performing essential functions. Data Conception: Requires the ability to compare and/or judge the readily observable, functional, structural or compositional characteristics (whether similar to or divergent from obvious standards) of assigned facility and applicable components (i.e., equipment, doors, surfaces, cleaning materials and supplies). Interpersonal Communication: Requires the ability of speaking and/or signaling people to convey or exchange information; includes receiving assignments and/or directions from supervisors. Includes giving directions to fellow staff. Requires the ability to tactfully and effectively interact with the public and with co-workers. Language Ability: Must be able to read and comprehend basic English, rendered in formats such as cleaning agent instructions, warning labels, equipment operation directions, order forms and other materials related to the job. Intelligence: Requires the ability to apply principles of common sense understanding to carry out detailed but uninvolved written or oral instructions; to deal with problems involving concrete variables in or from standardized situations; to perform manual labor and machine operations; to make independent judgments in the absence of supervisor; to acquire knowledge of topics related to primary occupation. Verbal Aptitude: Requires the ability to record and deliver information, to explain procedures, to follow oral and written instructions. Must be able to communicate effectively with co-workers and supervisors. Numerical Aptitude: Must be able to add and subtract totals. May require the ability to multiply and divide. Form/Spatial Aptitude: Requires the ability to inspect items for proper length, width and shape, and visually read various information. Motor Coordination: Requires the ability to coordinate hands and eyes accurately in using hand held and electrically powered equipment and machinery. Manual Dexterity: Requires the ability to handle a variety of items including control knobs, switches, power tools, hand tools, etc. Must have high levels of eye/hand/foot coordination. Color Discrimination: Requires the ability to differentiate between colors and shades of color. Interpersonal Temperament: Requires the ability to deal with people beyond receiving instructions. Must be adaptable to performing under minimal levels of stress when confronted with an emergency or tight deadline. Avoids violent behavior and any other type of behavior that could threaten the safety of other employees or the public. Physical Communication: Requires the ability to talk and hear: (talking: expressing or exchanging ideas by means of spoken words; hearing: perceiving nature of sounds by ear). Must be able to hear and understand communications through telephone and radio. Health Insurance is provided at a low cost to employees; family coverage is also available at a reasonable rate. Life Insurance - The BCC provides $25,000 of basic life and accidental death and dismemberment (AD&D) insurance for each employee. Employees may purchase optional group term life insurance in $25,000 increments up to a maximum of $500,000. Long Term Disability – BCC provides a long-term disability for all full-time employees. Has a six-month waiting period from date of incident, and then receives 50% of salary up to five years. Employee may buy up an additional 10%. Dental Insurance is provided at no cost to employee; family coverage is available for a reasonable rate. Section 125 Plan (Flexible Spending Plan) - Allows employees to pre-tax certain insurance costs; unreimbursed medical; and dependent care expenses. Florida Retirement System (FRS) – The County pays a percent of the employees’ salary into the FRS. Holidays /Annual and Sick Leave Accruals - The County offers 10 paid holidays and annual and sick leave accrual. Bereavement Leave - In the event of death in an employee’s immediate family (as defined in the Human Resources policy), he/she may be granted bereavement leave with pay for up to a maximum of twenty-four hours (24) hours. Deferred Compensation Savings is offered to all full-time employees through payroll deduction. Full-time employees offered free membership to Central Credit Union of Florida and Eglin Federal Credit Union. Participate through payroll deduction. Full-time employees may purchase U.S. Bonds through payroll deductions. Employee Assistance Program (EAP) - Full-time employees may use the EAP after completion of 6 month Probationary period. Three counseling sessions will be provided by the EAP provider at no cost to employee/spouse or dependent. Educational Reimbursement Program - Reimbursement of tuition and books for all full-time employees after one year of employment.
