The North Carolina State Highway Patrol's primary mission is to reduce collisions and make the highways of North Carolina as safe as possible. The NCSHP has more than 1,600 troopers who cover nearly 80,000 miles of North Carolina roadways, more than any other state except Texas. In addition to enforcing the state's traffic laws, state troopers also guide traffic during hurricane evacuations, re-route traffic around hazardous chemical spills, and they stand ready should any act of terrorism occur. State Troopers are committed to protecting North Carolina's motoring public.
This is law enforcement work performed at North Carolina state building and grounds. Employees investigate and enforce a variety of criminal and traffic cases, including crimes against persons and property and motor vehicle violations. Work involves enforcing state laws and regulations within jurisdictional boundaries and responding to calls for assistance in the state government complex. Investigates criminal offenses involving state property, state employees, or visitors to state property. Interviews persons to obtain information pertaining to crime scene. Checks buildings during non-working hours and at night to ensure security of property and equipment. Completes investigative reports pertaining to criminal acts reported in or around state buildings and property, and interviews victims and witnesses. May arrest suspects in connection with crimes or violations of law. May testify in court as needed. *Applicants hired prior to completion of Basic Law Enforcement Training and NC Probationary Law Enforcement Certification will be limited to recruit assignments until the training and certification are both complete. These recruits will perform tasks such as shadowing certified police officers, studying policies and procedures, and performing administrative tasks.

Key Responsibilities include but are not limited to:
- Investigate suspicious persons/activities reported by state employees or visitors.
- Provides information and assistance to visitors and/or motorists.
- Order state employees to clear buildings when advised of fire or bomb threats to safeguard life of employees/visitors.
- Enforce state laws and regulations within jurisdictional boundaries and respond to calls for assistance in the state government complex.
- Direct and reroute traffic around fire and other disturbances.
- Issue citations for violations of motor vehicle laws Investigate criminal offenses involving state property, state employees, or visitors to state property.
- Arrest subjects in connection with crimes or violations of laws.
- Testify in court to assist in resolution of cases involving traffic cases or crimes against the State and state employees/visitors while on duty.
- Check buildings during non-working hours and at night to ensure security of property and equipment.
Management Preferences:
- BLET Certified Demonstrated knowledge of investigative techniques and case preparation requirements for standard traffic and criminal cases.
- Demonstrated knowledge of criminal and traffic laws and laws relating to the rights of suspects, search, and seizure, maintaining the chain of evidence and arrest authority.
Minimum Education and Experience
High school or General Educational Development (GED) diploma.
Necessary Special Qualifications:
1. Must complete all requirements for an NC Probationary Law Enforcement Certification, including completion of Basic Law Enforcement Training, in accordance with the provisions of the North Carolina Criminal Justice Education and Training Standards Commission within one year of employment.
2. Must be at least 20 years of age.
3. Possession of a valid NC Driver's License.
