Application Engineer

We are a software engineering team within the Personal Wealth Technology. We support the Private Equity product suite, which primarily facilitates money movement and transaction processing between Vanguard and our external partner, HarbourVest. As an Application Engineer, you will play a critical role in designing, developing, and enhancing backend services and cloud-native solutions. We're looking for a senior-level engineer who can contribute immediately, help solve complex technical challenges, and serve as a technical mentor for junior developers. As a hands-on engineer, you will contribute across the full software development lifecycle, from analysis and design through development, deployment, and production support, while working in a modern, cloud-first environment.

Responsibilities:

• Provides senior level system analysis, design, development, and implementation of applications and databases. Integrates third party products.
• Translates technical specifications into code for complex new or enhancement projects for internal clients. Writes programs, develops code, tests artifacts, and produces reports. Employs software development techniques to ensure tests are implemented in a way that support automation.
• Elevates code into the development, test, and production environments on schedule. Provides follow up production support. Submits change control requests and documents.
• Thoroughly understands software development methodology. Thoroughly understands development architecture standards. Trains and mentors staff with less experience. Resolves elevated issues.
• Participates in design, code, and test inspections throughout the life cycle to identify issues. Explains technical considerations at related meetings, including those with internal clients. Performs systems analysis activities.
• Thoroughly understands client business functions and technology needs. Has a broad understanding of Vanguard's technologies, tools, and applications, including those that interface with business area and systems.
• Interfaces with cross functional team members and communicates systems issues at the appropriate technical level for each audience.
• Thoroughly understands and complies with Information Technology and Information Security policies and procedures and verifies that deliverables meet requirements.
• Participates in special projects and performs other duties as assigned.
• Collaborate effectively across teams, translating technical concepts appropriately for diverse audiences.

Qualifications:

• Extensive hands-on experience and strong expertise in Python programming.
• AWS Cloud technologies including AWS Lambda, SNS, SQS, DynamoDB, S3, Glue Jobs and other cloud-native technologies.
• Hand-on experience developing applications using Angular and Node.js technologies.
• Strong expertise on serverless front-end and back-end development experience is required.
• Nice-to-have: Familiarity with Java back-end technologies, APIs, and microservices architecture.
• Strong understanding of cloud-native architectures, CI/CD pipelines, DevOps practices, and modern software development principles.
• Experience leveraging and advocating for AI-assisted development practices using tools such as Claude and GitHub Copilot.
• Minimum of five years related work experience, with at least one year of development experience.
• Undergraduate degree or equivalent combination of training and experience.
