Career And Professional Development Advisor

The transition from student to professional is central to the success of Colorado School of Mines graduates and to the mission of our institution. The Career and Professional Development Advisor serves as a member of the career advising team, providing career guidance, professional development support, and job search assistance to students and recent graduates through a strategic plan of outreach, programming, and individualized advising. The Career and Professional Development Advisor helps students build the career readiness competencies and professional skills essential for a successful transition from school to career, as well as a foundation for lifelong career development and advancement. This includes supporting and integrating Mines' signature professional development initiatives—such as the Professional Advantage and the Vallejo Irvine Program (VIP) for Professional Development—into advising, workshops, and student engagement strategies.

In addition to advising responsibilities, this role supports Career Center leadership in the on-going collection, management, and reporting of First Destination Outcome data, leveraging relationships working with students to both collect data and offer essential support to job seekers.

Core responsibilities include delivering direct advising services, developing and facilitating workshops and events, supporting data collection, and the opportunity to teach academic courses. This role also requires the ability to evaluate and guide students through career, education, and employment decisions and plans. This is a full time, 12 month University Staff position and may offer partial hybrid flexibility. Advisors work primarily on campus in Golden, Colorado.

Primary Responsibilities

Career Advising and Professional Development

  • Advise students and recent graduates on career exploration and professional development practices.
  • Provide assistance and instruction on resume and CV writing, cover and thank-you letter development, interview presentation skills, and other tools and materials needed for an effective job search.
  • Instruct students and recent graduates on use of online recruiting systems and the Career Center policies and procedures related to services.
  • Provide job searching assistance for various levels of industry, research, managerial, academic, and international opportunities, including experiential learning opportunities such as internships and cooperative education.
  • Conduct practice interviews and consult on contract offers and salary negotiations.
  • Coordinate strategic outreach efforts to expand career services for specific populations of students, schedule and deliver group presentations and workshops to students and graduates.

Programming and Projects

  • Deliver group presentations and career and professional development workshops to students, prospective students, and graduates.
  • Support Professional Advantage and VIP professional development programming efforts such as signature events like the Etiquette Dinner.
  • Opportunity to teach for CSM 250 "Engineering Your Career Path" and CSM 550 "Navigating Your Job Search as a Graduate Student".
  • Present to faculty and other campus constituents on Career Center services, offerings, policies and procedures.
  • Assist as needed with all Career Center programs, events, activities, workshops and customer requests.
  • Represent the college and career services at various events, including but not limited to, promoting career services to faculty and staff, and presenting recruiting-related programs to students.
  • Supervise Student Assistants, Teaching Assistants, or/and Peer Advisors.

Data Collection and Reporting

  • Assist Career Center leadership with data collection of First Destination Survey data.
  • Maintain current student databases as it relates to students' first destination tracking.
  • Contribute to and manage assigned sections of annual report and other ad hoc requests.
  • Maintain program records and statistical information as it is related to student engagement, employment and program accountability.

Salary and Benefits

Annual salary: rate of $58,000 - $63,000

Mines takes into consideration a combination of candidate's education, training and experience as well as the position's scope and complexity, the discretion and latitude required in the role, work location, and external market and internal value when determining a salary level for potential new employees.
