Job Summary

This is a Cardiac Telemetry travel nursing position on a fast-paced, high-acuity unit that serves as the primary cardiac and stroke unit. The unit typically turns over 78 to 90 patients per week, meaning a nurse with a 6-patient assignment can end up turning over their complete assignment and starting over. A team lead is available to assist with admissions and discharges. The unit currently houses COVID-positive patients with the use of opti-flow and BIPAP, and the high side (23-bed side) of CTU is a COVID unit that takes patients on opti-flow and acute BIPAPs during a COVID surge.

Key Responsibilities

• Provide pre and post procedure care for cardiac patients , including pacemaker implantation, implanted cardioverter/defibrillators, cardiac catheterization, and TR bands.
• Care for post uncomplicated interventional peripheral vascular procedure/cardiac interventions without sheath(s).
• Manage patients with non-rebreather mask with stable O2 saturation (must be on pulse ox), unstable angina, low risk chest pain evaluation, CHF, dysrhythmias, all new CVA, and TIA patients.
• Run and titrate multiple cardiac drips including Cardizem, Dopamine, Amiodarone, and others.
• Titrate Cardizem drips per unit protocols.
• Manage telemetry monitoring and pulse oximetry; operate High Flow O2 (stable), Non-Rebreather Mask (palliative only), and BIPAP (chronic use only - no new BIPAP).
• Adhere to equipment restrictions: NO Blanketrol; NO unstable O2 with BIPAP; NO non-rebreather for non-palliative; NO respiratory rate greater than specified threshold; NO K greater than 60 mEq/Liter; NO new BIPAP.
• Utilize unit systems for medication, documentation, and communication: Pyxis , Dimensions (EPIC) , and SBAR .
• Participate in self-scheduling per unit guidelines with oversight from leadership to balance as needed.
• Maintain availability every day during week one for hospital orientation (36-hour orientation).
• Accept float assignment as required.
• Accept on-call assignment as required; frequency of on-call depends on patient census.
• Take a patient load of up to 1:5-6; must be comfortable taking 6 patients during surge.

Required Skills

• IV Start and Telemetry
• Pre and post procedure patient care for cardiac patients
• Cardiac drips management
• PCI (Percutaneous Coronary Intervention) experience
• Comfortable with patient ratios of 1:5-6 and surge assignments of 6 patients
• Experience on a fast-paced, high-acuity unit with similar acuity/ratios
• Ability to titrate Cardizem drips
• Familiarity with Pyxis, Dimensions (EPIC), and SBAR

Education Requirements

• ACLS (Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support) - Required
• BCLS (Basic Cardiovascular Life Support) - Required
• NIH Stroke Scale certification - Required
• Must pass EKG Testing prior to start for this specialty
• Flu vaccination required (medical/religious exemptions only)

Required Experience

• Minimum 2 years of experience required (challenging and very busy unit - must have similar experience with ratios/acuity)
• Traveler experience: first-time travelers accepted
• Local candidates accepted

Work Environment / Physical Requirements

• Shift: 12-Hour Nights; 18:45-07:15; Weekends - Friday, Saturday & Sunday
• Target Ratios: 1:5-6; could fluctuate based on unit needs; travelers must be comfortable taking 6 patients during surge
• Guaranteed Hours: 36 hours only can be offered for this role
• Call Requirement: Yes - frequency of on-call depends on patient census
• Float Requirement: Yes
• Scheduling Type: Self-scheduling per unit guidelines with oversight from leadership to balance as needed; NO BLOCK SCHEDULING
• RTO Policy: RTO after booking is NOT allowed and is NOT allowed to be worked out onsite. Any call-offs or additional RTO on unit could possibly result in contract cancellation and DNR (Do Not Rehire). RTO: 7-day maximum for AYA Auto Offer.
• Unit Orientation: 36 hours; travelers must be available every day during week one for hospital orientation
• Scrubs: Navy blue or white scrubs, or a mixture of the two; Novant t-shirts are allowed all days of the week; jackets must be the same material (not fleece) and color as uniforms; no crocs with holes
• Unit currently houses COVID-positive patients with the use of opti-flow and BIPAP
• High-volume unit: typically turns over 78 to 90 patients per week

• RTO after booking is NOT allowed and is NOT allowed to be worked out onsite. Any call-offs or additional RTO on unit could possibly result in contract cancellation and DNR (Do Not Rehire).
• Will accept 13-26 week contracts.
