Assistant United States Attorney (Civil)

Summary The Northern District of Alabama is currently seeking one attorney for a permanent Assistant United States Attorney (AUSA) position in the Civil Division. This position is located in the main office in Birmingham. Positions related to Bankruptcy practice Candidates who are interested should consider vacancy 26-ALN-13007765-AUSA available at Duties The attorney will represent the United States, its agencies, and employees primarily in civil litigation brought by or against the government. Responsibilities may include actions under the Federal Tort Claims Act, constitutional tort claims against federal employees, general employment litigation, and litigation filed by federal prisoners and immigration detainees. The attorney may also pursue affirmative claims on behalf of the government. Responsibilities will increase and assignments become more complex with training and experience. Security Requirements Initial appointment is conditioned upon a satisfactory pre‑employment adjudication, including fingerprint, credit, tax checks, and drug testing. Continued employment is subject to a favorable background investigation. Residency Requirements Assistant United States Attorneys must reside in the district to which they are appointed or within 25 miles thereof. See 28 U.S.C. 545 for district specific information. Selective Service Male applicants born after December 31, 1959 must certify registration with or exemption from the Selective Service System. Requirements United States citizen or national. Adjudication as described above. Registered for Selective Service, if applicable. J.D. degree (or equivalent) or be an active member of any U.S. jurisdiction bar by entry on duty date. Law school graduates and current students taking the July 2026 bar may be considered. Reside in the district or within 25 miles. See 28 U.S.C. 545. Qualifications Required Applicants must possess a J.D. degree (or equivalent) and be an active member of the bar by entry on duty date, be a United States citizen, and meet all requirements above. Preferred Strong legal research and writing skills. Prior civil litigation experience. Ability to work in a supportive and professional team environment with client agencies, support staff, and attorneys, with a demonstrated commitment to public service. Education Applicants must hold a J.D. degree by the entry on duty date. Salary Information Pay is determined based on years of professional attorney experience. Basic pay ranges from $77,522 to $197,100, including 18.24% locality pay. Relocation Expenses Relocation expenses will not be authorized. Travel Travel of 1 to 5 nights per month is required.
