Senior Food Service Worker (NBOE) JobID: 2249 Position Type: Non Instructional – All Titles/ Senior FSW – 2 Date Posted: 4/23/2025 Location: Various Newark Board of Education Locations Newark Board of Education Human Resource Services 765 Broad Street, Newark, New Jersey 07102 Roger León, Superintendent Senior Food Service Worker Various Locations (Pending availability of funds and Board of Education approval) Definition Under direction of a Cook, Head Cook, Food Service Supervisor, or other supervisory official, assists with the work involved in food preparation and service and may take the lead in a group of Food Service Workers. Duties include storing and preparing food for cooking and serving food. Qualifications and Requirements Graduation from High School or Vocational School or possession of an approved High School Equivalent Certificate. One (1) year of experience in general unskilled kitchen or food service work. Must be ServSafe Certified and have a valid Food Handlers certificate. Appointees will be required to possess a driver's license valid in New Jersey if vehicle operation is necessary. Basic Functions and Responsibilities Acts as a general assistant in a kitchen, bakery, cannery, dining room, cafeteria, or other food preparation or service unit. Serves special diets according to prescribed portions control guide set by Dietitian. Washes, scrubs, pares, hulls, cores, and prepares vegetables, fruits, and berries for cooking or serving using manual or power driven equipment. May assume responsibility for certain phases of food preparation and cooking. Assists in the cutting of meat and in baking. Assists in keeping the kitchen or other areas safe, clean, and orderly; cleans refrigerators. Assists or takes the lead in the serving of food from the steam tables and other cooking utensils; arranges trays. Delivers food to dining rooms and may assign employees in delivery of this service. May take the lead in the service of food. Assists, as required, in the preparation of salads, desserts, and beverages. Sets tables, changes linens, counts dishes, linen, and silverware. As a lead worker, ensures that other assigned employees transport and deliver food efficiently and timely. When assigned to a dishwashing unit, ensures that dishes, trays, pots, pans, silverware, and kitchen and other equipment are properly washed and dried. Washes kitchen, dining room tables, and food storage area. Washes and polishes ranges, roasters, broilers, milk cans, and other equipment. Polishes stainless steel equipment. Receives, checks, weighs, measures, issues, and prepares records and inventories of food supplies and equipment. Will be required to learn to utilize various types of electronic and/or manual recording and computerized information systems used by the agency, office, or related units. Knowledge and Abilities Knowledge of the preparation of vegetables and fruits for cooking. Knowledge of the proper methods and materials used in cleaning, polishing, and maintaining kitchen, storage, and food service areas. Ability to learn, understand, and acknowledge student rights and privileges. Ability to remember oral and written instructions and learn quickly from demonstrations. Ability to serve food from steam tables or other utensils efficiently. Ability to prepare trays and set tables. Ability to wait on tables and deliver trays. Ability to perform manual work involved in washing dishes, pots, pans, polishing silverware and metal equipment, and maintaining ranges and other equipment clean and polished. Ability to keep simple records. Ability to keep and prepare records such as production records, inventory, and temperature logs. Ability to learn to utilize various types of electronic and/or manual recording and information systems used by the agency, office, or related units. Ability to read, write, speak, understand, or communicate in English sufficiently to perform the duties of this position. American Sign Language or Braille may also be considered acceptable forms of communication.
