Position Overview

Indoor Science is seeking a Certified Industrial Hygienist (CIH) to join its industrial hygiene and indoor air quality (IAQ) consulting practice. This is a field consultant role. The right candidate is a credible, self-directed technical problem-solver who can walk into an unfamiliar building, figure out what's actually going on, design a sampling strategy, execute it, and write a defensible report a client can act on.

Indoor Science takes on a wide variety of unique, one-off projects that require sleuthing and engineering judgment as much as a checklist. This role should appeal to someone who enjoys that kind of investigative work rather than routine, repeatable inspections.

What You Will Own

Field Investigation & Testing

? Conduct field assessments for indoor air quality, mold/microbial and moisture intrusion, asbestos, lead-based paint, and related occupational/environmental hygiene concerns.

? Design and execute sampling strategies appropriate to the client's actual question — this is investigative work, not a fixed checklist.

? Sign off on projects requiring CIH-level review, including work performed by junior team members.

? Support unique or complex projects (e.g., fire restoration sites, manufacturing/chemical facilities, sheet metal and welding operations) that require creative problem-solving to determine what to test and how.

Reporting & Client Consulting

? Write clear, defensible, client-ready reports summarizing findings, risk, and recommendations.

? Communicate directly with clients — this is a consulting role with a genuine sales/relationship component, including scoping projects, discussing pricing, and following up on proposals.

? Represent Indoor Science professionally with property owners, facility managers, contractors, insurers, and industrial clients.

Team & Growth

? Work closely with coworkers on day-to-day project load and technical questions; collaborate on projects that don't require CIH sign-off.

? If not yet CIH-certified, pursue certification with the company's support (see Compensation & Benefits) — this is an explicit growth path for the right candidate, not just a hiring bar.

Required Qualifications

? Certification: Active CIH strongly preferred. Candidates who are not yet certified but are actively pursuing the CIH (e.g., an upcoming exam date or a clear plan to sit for it) are genuinely encouraged to apply and will be considered seriously.

? Experience: CIH holders inherently bring the several years of experience required for certification. Non-certified candidates should have at least 3+ years of hands-on asbestos, lead, and/or mold consulting experience.

? Licensing: Illinois Asbestos Inspector and Illinois Asbestos Air Sampling Professional licenses required, or the ability to obtain both within [90 days] of hire. 

? Education: Degree in a hard science or related field — Environmental Health & Safety, Occupational and Environmental Hygiene, Environmental Engineering, Physics, Chemistry, or Biology.

? Consulting orientation: Comfortable with the investigative and client-facing sides of the work — this is consulting, not just field technical execution.

? Travel & location: Able to travel 50%+ regionally and based in the Chicagoland area (or willing to relocate to, at own expense).

? Other: Valid driver's license, reliable vehicle, and general computer proficiency.

Preferred Qualifications

? Illinois Lead Risk Assessor or Lead Inspector license.

? Illinois Radon license is a nice-to-have, not required.

? Familiarity with OSHA, NIOSH, EPA, IDPH, ASHRAE, and IICRC standards.

? Prior experience in a consulting environment involving proposal writing, scoping, or client relationship management.

? Demonstrated self-starter track record — someone who has taken on ambiguous or unusual projects and figured them out.

Compensation and Benefits

? Base salary: $90,000 - $120,000

? Company-supported CIH exam preparation training for candidates working toward certification.
