Technical Lab Assistant

Location: Regional Lab, 3300 State Street, Salem, Oregon 97301 Department: Lab Clinical Services Position Type: Full Time, 35 hours/week, Non-Exempt Schedule: 12:00 pm - 10:30 pm, four 10-hour shifts, variable day schedule with rotating Saturdays Your role with us As a technical lab assistant at Salem Health, you’ll be a vital part of our diagnostic team. Helping support timely, accurate laboratory testing that directly impacts patient care. You’ll help ensure specimens are collected, processed, and analyzed with precision, while working closely with medical technologists, nurses, and other clinical partners. This role is ideal for someone who thrives in a fast‑paced environment, enjoys hands‑on technical work, and takes pride in maintaining high standards of quality and safety. Every shift, you’ll contribute to the smooth flow of laboratory operations and help deliver results that clinicians rely on to make critical decisions. What you’ll do Process patient specimens promptly upon arrival, prioritizing critical samples such as trauma, code, and stat orders. Collect and handle specimens according to established procedures, ensuring proper storage and adherence to test requirements. Use the Laboratory Information System to enter, verify, and troubleshoot orders, including monitoring overdue and pending logs. Collaborate with nursing and clinical teams to resolve order issues and maintain smooth workflow across departments. Perform waived and moderately complex testing independently under the direction of medical technologists. Follow infection control and safety protocols, including proper PPE use and safe handling of hazardous materials. Manage multi‑line phone communication, ensuring timely, accurate message relay and professional service. Participate in quality assurance activities, including proficiency and competency testing. Maintain inventory through stocking and ordering to support uninterrupted lab operations. Engage in continuing education to strengthen skills and stay current with laboratory practices. Required qualifications High School Diploma or equivalent. One year of laboratory training/experience in a clinical lab OR completion of three quarters of college‑level laboratory coursework. Additional information Familiarity with medical terminology strongly preferred. Experience with Laboratory Information Systems (LIS) and Hospital Information Systems (HIS) is highly desirable.
