Job Title: Assistant Principal
Reports to: Principal
School:Colonial Park School
Primary Purpose:
Assist the school principal in overall administration of instructional program and PK-Grade 4 operations. Coordinate assigned student activities and services.
Qualifications:
Education/Certification:
Masters degree
Massachusetts assistant principal / principal license
Special Knowledge/Skills:
- Thorough understanding of school operations
- Strong organizational communication and interpersonal skills
- Ability to coordinate school day-to-day operations
- Working knowledge of curriculum and instruction
- Ability to evaluate instructional program and teaching effectiveness
- Ability to manage personnel
- Ability to implement policy and procedures in accordance with Massachusetts state laws and school district policies
- Ability to interpret data
Experience:
Minimum of five years of experience as a classroom teacher
Previous administrative experience preferred
Major Responsibilities and Duties:
Instructional Management
- Participate in development and evaluation of educational programs.
- Encourage and support development of innovative instructional programs helping teachers pilot such efforts when appropriate.
- Promote the use of technology in teaching/learning process.
School/Organizational Climate
- Promote a positive caring climate for learning.
- Deal sensitively and fairly with persons from diverse cultural backgrounds.
- Communicate effectively with students and staff.
School/Organizational Improvement
- Participate in development of school improvement plans with staff parents and community members.
- Help principal develop maintain and use information systems to maintain records to track progress on school and student academic improvement.
Personnel Management
- Observe employee performance record observations and conduct evaluation conferences. Serve as evaluator for designated educational staff.
- Assist principal in interviewing selecting and orienting new staff.
Administration and Facilities Management
- Supervise operations in principals absence.
- Help plan daily school activities by participating in the development of class schedules teacher assignments and extracurricular activity schedules.
- Assist with monitoring of student attendance and work with attendance officer on follow-up as needed.
- Assist with safety inspections and safety-drill practice activities.
- Coordinate custodial cafeteria and other support services as necessary.
- Comply with and implement federal and state laws State Board of Education and school committee policy.
Student Management
- Ensure that students are adequately supervised during non-instructional periods.
- Assist with student discipline management system that results in positive student behavior.
- Ensure that school rules are uniformly observed and that student discipline is appropriate and equitable.
- Conduct conferences on student and school issues with parents students and teachers.
Professional Growth and Development
- Participate in professional development to improve skills related to job assignment.
School/Community Relations
- Articulate the schools mission to community and solicit its support in realizing mission.
- Demonstrate awareness of school-community needs and initiate activities to meet those needs.
- Use appropriate and effective techniques to encourage community and parent involvement.
- Other duties as assigned.
Supervisory Responsibilities:
Share supervisory responsibility for professional staff with school principal. Supervise teachers custodians ESPs clerical personnel and others as assigned.

TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT:
Salary and conditions of employment to be determined by the Superintendent of Schools in accordance with Unit B collective bargaining agreement.
EVALUATION:
Performance of this position will be supervised & evaluated by the school principal.
Work Environment Environmental or atmospheric conditions commonly associated with the performance of the functions of this job.
- General office conditions and moderate noise levels.
Mental Demands/Physical Demands/Environmental Factors:
- Maintain emotional control under stress. Work with frequent interruptions. Occasional districtwide travel; occasional prolonged hours.

- Must be able to sit for extended periods of time.
