Physical Therapist / Occupational Therapist Reports To: Clinic Manager Position Summary The Physical Therapist is responsible for evaluating patients and developing and implementing individualized treatment plans designed to alleviate pain, restore function, prevent or minimize disability, and promote optimal health, independence, mobility, and quality of life. The therapist provides skilled, evidence-based care in accordance with physician orders, professional standards, and applicable state and federal regulations. Essential Functions Essential functions include, but are not limited to: Evaluates patients and develops individualized physical or occupational therapy treatment plans based on physician orders, clinical findings, patient goals, evaluations, and diagnostic test results. Provides skilled therapeutic interventions in accordance with established plans of care and accepted professional standards. Monitors patient progress and modifies treatment plans as clinically indicated. Educates patients and caregivers regarding diagnoses, treatment plans, precautions, home exercise programs, self-management strategies, and recommended equipment. Assures continuity of care following discharge by developing appropriate home exercise programs, recommending assistive devices or adaptive equipment, and providing referrals or recommendations for follow-up care when appropriate. Completes thorough, accurate, and timely documentation of evaluations, interventions, patient response, progress toward goals, and discharge summaries in accordance with clinic policies and regulatory requirements. Maintains the confidentiality and security of patient health information in accordance with HIPAA and organizational policies. Accurately records treatment charges and completes billing documentation in a timely manner. Collaborates effectively with physicians, other healthcare providers, clinic staff, patients, and caregivers to promote coordinated patient care. Supervises and directs Physical Therapist Assistants or Occupational Therapy Assistants in patient care and related activities, as permitted by applicable laws and regulations. Provides appropriate supervision and mentorship to physical therapy or occupational therapy students participating in clinical education experiences with the organization. Complies with all applicable State of Maine laws, professional practice acts, codes of ethics, regulations, and standards governing physical or occupational therapy practice. Participates in quality improvement initiatives and supports efforts to promote efficient, safe, and effective patient care. Additional Responsibilities Recognizes and responds appropriately to urgent or emergent situations in accordance with established clinic policies and protocols. Maintains a clean, organized, and safe treatment environment, including treatment areas, equipment, examination rooms, and supplies. Maintains a professional appearance and demonstrates professional conduct at all times. Follows all clinic policies, procedures, and work practices as outlined in the employee handbook and other organizational policies. Establishes and maintains positive and effective working relationships with physicians, staff, management, patients, and community partners. Maintains regular clinic hours and attendance as approved by the Clinic Manager. Attends staff meetings, trainings, and other organizational meetings as requested. Participates in continuing education and professional development to maintain clinical competency and licensure requirements. Performs other duties as assigned. Qualifications Education Graduate of an accredited Physical Therapy program. Current unrestricted license to practice Physical Therapy in the State of Maine. Certification/Licensure Current CPR/AED certification for Healthcare Providers or ability to obtain certification within the timeframe established by the organization. Maintains all required professional licenses and certifications. Experience Previous clinical experience as a Physical Therapist preferred. New graduates with appropriate clinical education experience may be considered. Required Skills and Competencies Strong clinical knowledge of physical or occupational therapy principles, practices, and evidence-based interventions. Strong organizational, time-management, and interpersonal skills. Knowledge of medical terminology and appropriate CPT and ICD-10 coding practices. Ability to assess patient needs and develop appropriate individualized treatment plans. Ability to prioritize and manage multiple tasks efficiently and effectively. Strong verbal and written communication skills. Ability to work independently while contributing effectively as part of an interdisciplinary team. Working knowledge of electronic medical records and standard computer applications. Ability to remain calm, professional, and effective in busy or stressful situations. Demonstrates sound clinical judgment and appropriate decision-making skills. Commitment to maintaining patient confidentiality and professional ethical standards. Other Requirements Maintains current State of Maine professional license. Maintains current CPR/AED certification as required. Adheres to all organizational policies and procedures, including standards related to safety, attendance, punctuality, professional conduct, and personal appearance. Demonstrates flexibility and willingness to adapt to changes in workflow, patient volume, scheduling, and clinic operations. Ability to communicate effectively in English, both verbally and in writing. Vision: Visual acuity sufficient to perform patient assessments, observe patient movement and responses, read documentation, and utilize computer systems. Mobility: Requires frequent standing, walking, bending, reaching, squatting, kneeling, and sitting throughout the workday. Manual Dexterity: Requires sufficient manual dexterity to safely perform therapeutic techniques, patient assessments, documentation, and operation of clinic equipment. Lifting and Physical Assistance: Requires the ability to frequently lift, carry, push, pull, and assist with movement of equipment and patients, including items weighing up to approximately 30 pounds unassisted and heavier loads with appropriate assistance or equipment. Work Environment: May involve exposure to communicable diseases, bodily fluids, and other conditions commonly encountered in a healthcare setting.
