Tenure-Track Faculty Positions In The Department Of Fisheries

The University of Alaska Fairbanks (UAF) College of Fisheries and Ocean Sciences (CFOS) invites applications for one or more tenure-track faculty positions at the Assistant Professor level in the Department of Fisheries based in Fairbanks, Alaska. Applications are encouraged from individuals with strong scientific and academic backgrounds who are committed to fostering excellence in undergraduate and graduate education at UAF. Successful candidates will complement the broad expertise of existing faculty and contribute to high-quality research, teaching, and service. UAF is a federally recognized Alaska Native-serving institution that supports bridging Indigenous and Western sciences.

UAF is Alaska's research university and America's Arctic university. Successful applicants will enjoy opportunities to join CFOS's world-class high-latitude teaching and research programs in marine, estuarine, and freshwater ecosystems. CFOS offers a B.S. in Fisheries and Marine Sciences, a B.A. in Fisheries, Minors in Marine Science and Fisheries, Master of Marine Policy, Master of Marine Studies and Blue MBA degree programs, as well as M.S. and Ph.D. degrees in Oceanography, Marine Biology and Fisheries. The College has over 50 faculty, researchers and staff, more than 125 graduate students, and one of the nation's largest undergraduate degree programs in fisheries and marine sciences. The Department of Fisheries maintains a nationally and internationally recognized, growing program that includes 15 tenured or tenure-track faculty, one research faculty, and nine other faculty with primary appointments outside of the department.

To thrive in this role, candidates will be expected to develop and lead a productive and externally funded research program focused on fisheries biology, ecology, management, or social sciences. This research program should emphasize Alaska's fisheries and ecosystems and involve students and postdoctoral researchers. Candidates will also be expected to teach undergraduate and graduate courses, with a particular focus on the undergraduate fisheries program through both instruction and advising.

Minimum qualifications include a Ph.D. in fisheries, biology, ecology, economics, anthropology, or a closely related field. Postdoctoral research experience is preferred. Applicants must be proficient in English, have experience teaching at the university level, and have a strong research, publication and funding record, commensurate with experience. An unrestricted Alaska driver's license and clean driving record in compliance with UA Safe Driving criteria is required. To be eligible for this position, applicants must be legally authorized to work in the United States without restriction. Applicants who now or may in the future require visa sponsorship to work in the United States are not eligible.

This is a full-time, Fair Labor Standards Act exempt, tripartite tenure-track faculty position, providing both a competitive salary (starting pay is DOE) and full employee benefits package. UA provides a generous compensation package that includes retirement options, faculty time off, 12 paid holidays per year, tuition waivers for employees and family members, and affordable medical, dental and vision care coverage.

This position will be based on the main Troth Yedda' campus in Fairbanks, Alaska (population ~95,000). Fairbanks, the hub of Interior Alaska, is known for its striking seasonal contrasts, the midnight sun, northern lights, close-knit and resilient culture, and unmatched access to boreal forests, wild rivers, and expansive landscapes that support both adventurous living and cutting-edge research.

Initial review of applications beginning on July 1, 2026. To ensure consideration, please submit your application by 11:55 PM Alaska Standard Time on June 30, 2026. The intended start date is January 2027.

Special instructions to applicants include submitting an online application and including a brief cover letter, a statement summarizing your past and future research program including your overall approach to scientific research and how you envision your research program at CFOS, with particular emphasis on complementing our existing research expertise; your past teaching experiences, teaching pedagogy, and how your approach to teaching and mentoring will complement and diversify CFOS's programs; and your commitment to public and professional service and community engagement (not to exceed five total pages for research, teaching and service), a curriculum vitae, a sample publication or creative product, and contact information for three professional references (address, email, and phone number).
