Academic Advisor I

Academic Advisor I East Texas A&M University – Department of Academic Advising. Staff position located in Commerce, Texas. Job Overview The Academic Advisor I recruits and advises undergraduate students throughout their academic careers, providing career guidance, academic schedule planning, and support services. The role serves as a liaison among Colleges, University offices, and external resources, supervising students’ progress and ensuring degree completion. Responsibilities Provide academic advice and guidance on degree programs, course selection, and academic schedules. Assist students with add/drop procedures, withdrawals, and curriculum changes. Review academic records and test scores to recommend appropriate courses. Monitor student progress, verify completion of degree requirements, and make input on probationary status decisions. Refer students to resources for college admissions, re‑admission, professional interests, housing, financial aid, student services, academic preparation, time‑management skills, and study skills. Respond to inquiries from students and parents and act as a liaison with other University offices regarding admissions, registration, and degree audits. Meet with freshman and transfer students during orientation and direct those needing assistance to the appropriate departments. Assist with family visits, group tours, and presentation of the University to visiting groups. Develop and maintain positive relationships with Academic Deans, faculty, staff, and University departments involved in Academic Advising. Provide leadership for faculty advisors on academic‑advising activities and develop training materials and programs on proactive/intrusive advising. Participate in System, College, and department events, including orientation, career fairs, workshops, seminars, symposiums, and conferences. Maintain records of student contacts, prepare academic and advising reports, and serve on university and departmental committees. Contribute to curriculum and degree‑plan development, new‑program development, and scholarship application review. Qualifications Bachelor’s degree in an applicable field. Zero years of related experience in advising or recruiting (entry‑level). Proficiency with word processing, spreadsheet, and database applications. Experience with student information systems, degree planning, and degree audits. Excellent written and verbal communication, analytical, interpersonal, and organizational skills. Ability to multitask, present information clearly, maintain confidentiality, work beyond normal office hours and/or on weekends, and travel as required. Valid driver’s license. Preferred Qualifications Master’s degree. Bilingual Spanish proficiency. Benefits Employee tuition assistance for master’s and doctoral programs.
