Bus Driver

Ensure safe and orderly transportation of students on assigned routes. Operate a school bus that transports students and authorized personnel to and from schools or other designated locations.

Qualifications

• Ability to obtain a valid Texas commercial driver's license (Class B) with Passenger (P) and School Bus (S) endorsements
• Maintain an acceptable driving record in accordance with DPS regulations
• Ability to pass annual Department of Transportation (DOT) physical examination

Special Knowledge/Skills

• Must be at least 18 years of age
• Ability to pass random alcohol and drug testing
• Ability to complete required bus driver safety training and maintain certification
• Ability to use maps and Global Positioning Systems (GPS)
• Ability to follow written and verbal instructions
• Ability to communicate effectively
• Knowledge of student discipline procedures
• Ability to manage student behavior
• Ability to safely operate a school bus

Major Responsibilities and Duties

Vehicle Operation

1. Follow assigned routes and adhere to established schedules.
2. Drive bus for extracurricular activities as assigned.
3. Anticipate traffic, weather, and road conditions and adjust accordingly to ensure safety and timeliness.
4. Inspect bus before and after operation; check fuel, tires, lights, brakes, and steering.
5. Report accidents, vehicle damage, student injuries, and mechanical failures; complete required reports.
6. Maintain accurate records of mileage, fuel consumption, and passenger counts.
7. Keep assigned bus clean and properly fueled.
8. Notify appropriate personnel of route condition changes or hazards.

Student Management

1. Instruct students on safe riding rules and supervise boarding, exiting, and street crossing.
2. Maintain discipline and report behavior concerns according to district procedures.
3. Communicate with administrators, teachers, and parents regarding student behavior when appropriate.
4. Perform emergency evacuations when necessary.
5. Maintain accurate student rosters.
6. Assist students with disabilities as required, including securing wheelchairs and operating adaptive equipment.

Safety

1. Observe all traffic laws and school bus safety regulations.
2. Maintain safety certification and acceptable driving record.
3. Ensure emergency equipment is present and in proper working condition.
4. Report hazardous route conditions.
5. Correct unsafe work conditions and notify supervisor of issues that cannot be immediately resolved.
6. Administer first aid as needed in accordance with training.

Other

1. Operate two-way radio to communicate with transportation office.
2. Work irregular hours as required.
3. Review transportation forms to ensure compliance with Individualized Education Programs (IEPs).
4. Complete required annual training.
5. Maintain confidentiality in accordance with FERPA.

None.

Mental Demands / Physical Demands / Environmental Factors

Tools/Equipment Used: School bus; two-way radio; Global Positioning System (GPS); safety equipment including fire extinguisher and reflective signs; wheelchair lift/ramps; adaptive equipment. Posture: Prolonged sitting and driving; frequent standing and twisting; occasional kneeling/squatting, bending/stooping, and pushing/pulling. Motion: Frequent climbing stairs, grasping/squeezing, wrist and shoulder flexion/extension, and reaching. Lifting: Moderate lifting and carrying; may assist with lifting students or equipment. Environment: Frequent exposure to extreme temperatures, noise, vehicle fumes, and moving vehicles or machinery; may work irregular or prolonged hours. Mental Demands: Maintain emotional control under stress.
