Technical Manager

Job Summary Oversee quality systems and training as it applies to laboratory operations. Responsible for the application, evaluation and training of approved microbiological/chemical techniques and methodologies used in the analysis of food products. The position ensures compliance with ISO/IEC 17025 for food testing laboratories, maintains frequent contact with the Director of Quality and Training, assists with daily maintenance of quality and training systems, and provides technical support to laboratory operations. Implement and maintain quality systems in accordance with regulatory agency requirements, including ISO/IEC 17025, A2LA, FDA and USDA. Monitor quality control programs and ensure compliance with company quality policies, SOPs and regulatory guidelines. Perform internal audits and assist with external audits to identify opportunities for improvement. Manage the laboratory’s Document Control System and facilitate policy and procedural updates. Manage the laboratory’s Corrective Action and Preventive Action (CAPA) system. Coordinate and manage the laboratory’s Proficiency Testing (PT) program. Monitor the Laboratory Control Sample (LCS) Program and review statistical process charts. Manage the laboratory’s equipment calibration and verification program. Administer technical and quality system training for laboratory personnel, maintain training and competency records, and continually improve training effectiveness. Integrate new technologies into quality and training programs. Maintain a high degree of technical competence by reading scientific literature and attending professional workshops. Provide technical support to the laboratory and clients. Plan work schedules to accommodate laboratory needs. Work closely with the Laboratory Management Team, including authority to stop work and request sample resets as necessary. Assist in managing priorities and schedules to achieve individual and team goals. Ensure safety of self and others within the working area. Complete required trainings and obtain method verification authorization. Education & Experience BS degree (or pursuing MS degree) in Microbiology, Chemistry, Food Science, Food Safety, or a related field. 2‑3 years of experience in a microbiological or chemical testing laboratory (food microbiology/chemistry preferred). Training experience required. Laboratory/technical auditing experience required. ISO/IEC 17025 knowledge required. Ability to differentiate between colors is required. Supervision Directly supervise employees. Carry out all responsibilities in accordance with company policies, SOPs and best practices. Assist in compliance with all applicable laws and regulations. Physical Demands / Work Environment Dexterity of hands and fingers for operating a computer keyboard and mouse. Potential exposure to odors, fumes, airborne particles, hazardous chemicals, and microbiological pathogens. Variable noise levels from quiet to loud. Variable temperatures from hot to cold. Interactive, fast‑paced, team‑oriented tasks. Occasional lifting of up to 25 pounds. Color vision and depth perception required.
