Machine Mechanic

The Machine Keeper (Mechanic) maintains the production machinery in proper operating order through preventive maintenance, troubleshooting, repair, and improvement.

The Machine Keeper should have the capability to read and interpret process information; and understand the impact their actions have on the quality objective.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following. Other duties may be assigned.

  • Performs preventative maintenance procedures:
    • Checks settings, gauge readings, sensors, etc. regularly in order to keep machines operating at proper specifications.
    • Completes periodic cleaning and lubrication of machines.
    • Tightens bolts and inspects belts and chains for wear and tear and for proper tensions.
    • Makes continuing visual and audible observations of the machines in order to detect any abnormalities.
    • Verifies all maintenance activates are complete
    • Makes recommendations for preventive maintenance changes or updates
  • Troubleshoots problems with machine operation:
    • Confers with machine operators to determine the nature of the problem.
    • Looks for any defective materials going into the system.
    • Inspects machines for any jams, breakage, abnormal vibrations, etc., that may be causing the problem.
    • Checks settings, gauges, and sensors to determine if and what adjustments may be needed.
    • Inspects the internal components of the machine by the disassembly of certain machinery parts.
    • Examines the texture and dimensions of the machine parts to detect wear and/or imperfections.
    • Examines the mechanical, pneumatic, electrical, and electronic operation of machinery.
  • Restores machines to correct operating function:
    • Makes necessary mechanical and pneumatic, adjustments.
    • Replaces broken and/or worn parts.
    • Overhauls or repairs mechanical parts as necessary.
    • Confers with the appropriate personnel, such as the Electronic Technicians for electrical/electronic repairs.
    • Replaces belts, covers, etc. as needed.
    • Starts-up and test machine for corrected operation.
  • Analyzes the down time and quality deficiencies for the line and reports any information, along with suggestions for improvement, to the Supervisor and the appropriate management personnel.
  • Makes recommendations to improve efficiency and decrease process defects in the department. Helps develop and achieve a recommended plan.
  • Instructs operators on how to complete minor repairs and adjustments to the machines.
  • Maintains complete and accurate records of all work done on the equipment and machines.
  • Counts inventory of materials in the area. Reconciles inventory discrepancies.
  • Read, understand, and adhere to safety and environmental protection procedures and work instructions.
  • Follows all company and departmental policies and procedures.
  • Maintains active communication with management and other employees about all job-related concerns, and informs the Supervisor when problems occur.
  • Attendance is an essential function of the job.

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES: None.

QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE High school diploma or general education degree (GED) and two years technical training or two years related work experience or an equivalent combination of technical training and experience.

LANGUAGE SKILLS Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals.

Ability to write routine reports and correspondence. Ability to speak effectively with other employees of organization.

MATHEMATICAL SKILLS Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals. Ability to compute rate, ratio, and percent and to draw and interpret bar graphs.

REASONING ABILITY Ability to apply commonsense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagram form. Ability to deal with problems involving several concrete variables in standardized situations.

OTHER SKILLS and ABILITIES Must be able to understand and use English and Metric units of measure. Basic knowledge of EMS work instructions and Hazardous Waste Management procedures relevant to positions for which assigned. Training may include, but not limited to, on-the-job training, department reviews and internal/external training. Must have knowledge within operating parameters specified by permits and EMS Work Instructions.

The employee must frequently lift and/or move up to 25 pounds and occasionally lift and/or move up to 100 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee regularly works near moving mechanical parts. The employee is frequently exposed to risk of electrical shock. The employee occasionally works in high, precarious places and is occasionally exposed to fumes or airborne particles, toxic or caustic chemicals, extreme heat, and vibration.

The noise level in the work environment is usually loud.
