Tax Analyst

Zymtronix Catalytic Systems Inc

Tax Analyst Location: Ithaca, New York. Remote within the United States is possible. This position is within the Division of Financial Services (DFS) and the University Tax Office. DFS provides central financial support for Cornell University and the Vision is to “deliver world‑class financial services to the university.” The University Tax Office manages all federal, state, and international tax compliance for Cornell and its related entities. What you will do: Gather tax reporting data and enter or compile tax data into tax preparation software, files, or documents. Perform basic tax analysis, reconciliations and calculations. Review and respond to assigned tax‑related emails and phone calls. Assist with responses to tax notices and inquiries from taxing jurisdictions or authorities. Support the University’s global tax returns or reports; typical focus areas include sales and use tax, payroll tax, and Form 990/unrelated‑business income tax. With guidance from the Tax Manager, conduct basic tax research such as reading and analyzing tax return instructions, laws, and regulations and conveying findings to team members. Apply a basic understanding of accounting rules and requirements to understand and apply tax accounting concepts. What we need: Bachelor’s Degree focused in accounting, business, finance, or a related field, with a minimum of 3 years of related experience or an equivalent combination of education and experience. Ability to read and understand tax return instructions and related guidance. Basic knowledge of accounting concepts and reconciliations. Demonstrated interest in a career in taxation. 1 to 2 years of experience preparing U.S. federal, state, or local income or indirect tax returns, or licensed CPA or bar licensure in a U.S. state or territory. Strong teamwork skills with flexibility and organization. Discretion, tact, and good judgment when handling highly sensitive and confidential information. Analytical skills to identify and resolve problems in a timely manner. Effective written and oral communication with a wide range of contacts, including faculty, staff, students, tax authorities, and the public. Preferred (but not required): Active CPA or bar licensure, or desire to obtain such licensure. Experience with non‑profit taxation, JD, MBA, or MS with a concentration in taxation.
