Certified Athletic Trainer

Position Summary The Athletic Trainer serves as the primary healthcare professional for the school's interscholastic athletic program. The Athletic Trainer reports to the Athletic Director for administrative matters but operates under the clinical direction of a licensed Directing Physician in accordance with Massachusetts state law. The Athletic Trainer is responsible for the prevention, evaluation, treatment, rehabilitation, and return-to-play management for student-athletes across all sports while promoting the health and safety of all student-athletes. The Athletic Trainer is an integral member of our educational community, supporting the health, safety, and well-being of student-athletes while helping them reach their full potential both on and off the field. Qualifications Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Athletic Training from an accredited program. Current Board of Certification (BOC) certification and a valid Massachusetts Athletic Trainer license (or immediate eligibility for licensure). Current First Aid, CPR, and AED certification for the Healthcare Professional. Must possess a National Provider Identifier (NPI) number. Demonstrated ability to establish and maintain a professional relationship with a Directing Physician to provide clinical oversight and sign-off on annual Medical Standing Orders in compliance with Massachusetts law (259 CMR 4.02). Comprehensive knowledge of Massachusetts Department of Public Health regulations regarding Head Injuries and Concussions in Interscholastic Athletics (105 CMR 201.000). Demonstrated knowledge of injury prevention, evaluation, treatment, rehabilitation, emergency care, and current best practices in sports medicine. Ability to practice in accordance with the standards and guidelines of the National Athletic Trainers' Association (NATA), the Commonwealth of Massachusetts, the Massachusetts Interscholastic Athletic Association (MIAA), and Mount Greylock Regional School policies. Experience working with high school student-athletes preferred, with the ability to build positive relationships with students, families, coaches, school personnel, and healthcare providers. Successful completion of all state and district employment requirements, including CORI and fingerprint-based background checks. Essential Responsibilities Work Schedule and Event Coverage The Athletic Trainer is expected to work a flexible 10-month schedule that includes afternoons, evenings, weekends, and school vacation periods as required by practices, competitions, and postseason events. Daily work hours will vary based on the athletic schedule. The Certified Athletic Trainer will: provide coverage for all home-sporting events; both during the regular season and for tournament competitions. In the case of two home events scheduled for the same day and time, the Certified Athletic Trainer will provide direct coverage for that activity which is deemed to have the highest possibility of injury, but may move to different facilities/fields as needed. be available Monday through Friday (including school breaks) for the evaluation of injuries and the care of athletes prior to practices. On Saturdays, Sundays and Holidays, the Certified Athletic Trainer will only be responsible for event coverage. Assist with administrative duties assigned by the Athletic Director, provided such duties do not interfere with the primary clinical responsibility of student-athlete healthcare and injury prevention. These duties could include but are not limited to: Site Management at home athletic contests Assist in developing policies related to student-athlete health and safety. Assist with pre-participation medical clearance processes Event scheduling, transportation coordination, officials and staff coordination, Roster management including updating for eligibility and injuries, Second point of contact for the athletic program including on game days Medical Oversight and Clinical Direction The Certified Athletic Trainer will: Establish and maintain a professional relationship with a licensed Directing Physician (MD or DO) to provide clinical oversight of the athletic training program in accordance with Massachusetts state law (259 CMR 4.02). Develop, implement, and annually review written Medical Standing Orders in collaboration with the Directing Physician to define protocols for injury management, emergency care, and treatment. Serve as the primary clinical liaison between the school’s athletic program and the Directing Physician for complex injury cases, significant head injuries, and final medical clearances. Ensure that the Directing Physician’s information is accurately on file with the Massachusetts Board of Registration of Allied Health Professions as required for professional licensure. Student-Athlete Care & Injury Management The Certified Athletic Trainer will: Provide injury prevention services, on-site injury evaluation, acute care, treatment, rehabilitation, and follow-up care for students participating in athletic programs. Provide immediate emergency care during practices, competitions, and athletic events. Develop, maintain, and implement Emergency Action Plans (EAPs) for athletic facilities. Coordinate emergency response procedures with coaches, administrators, EMS, and school personnel. The Athletic Trainer has the unchallengeable authority to remove a student-athlete from play if an injury is suspected. Return-to-play decisions will be made in accordance with state law, district policy, and the protocols established by the Directing Physician. Evaluate athletic injuries and illnesses occurring during practices and competitions and determine participation status in collaboration with healthcare providers, parents/guardians, coaches, and Athletic Administration. Develop, implement, and communicate treatment plans and return-to-play protocols in coordination with student-athletes, parents/guardians, coaches, healthcare providers, and appropriate school personnel. Oversee the school’s concussion management program in accordance with 105 CMR 201.000. This includes implementing graduated return-to-play protocols, and serving as the primary liaison between the student’s physician, the family, and the school’s 'Return-to-Learn' team (nurses, counselors, and teachers). Coordinate referrals to physicians, specialists, and other healthcare professionals when appropriate and communicate relevant injury status and participation recommendations. Notify parents/guardians when injuries require outside medical evaluation, treatment, or follow-up care. Collaborate with school nursing staff to support continuity of care for school-day injuries, including soft-tissue injuries and traumatic brain injuries. Maintain team medical kits. Coordinate medical coverage for designated varsity home events, including communication with ambulance services when appropriate. Maintain complete, accurate, and accessible records of all athletic injuries, treatments, and related documentation, ensuring availability to school administrators when required. Maintain injury statistics and reports as requested. Maintain student-athlete confidentiality in accordance with applicable laws, district policies, and professional standards. Athletic Eligibility, Compliance & Communication The Certified Athletic Trainer will: Verify medical eligibility for all student-athletes through review of pre-participation physical examinations and required documentation. Communicate regularly with coaches regarding athlete eligibility, participation status, availability, and restrictions. Oversee the athletic registration platform and related eligibility processes in coordination with the Athletic Director. Review Athletic Training Policies and the Emergency Action Plan annually, securing approval from Athletic Administration. Audit the fitting, selection, and use of protective equipment to ensure safety, proper standards, and compliance. Serve as a liaison among student-athletes, families, healthcare providers, coaches, the school nurse, counselors, and administrators. Maintain professional communication while protecting confidential student medical information in accordance with applicable laws and district policies. Benefits & Compensation: Annual salary range: $55,000 – $65,000, commensurate with education and experience.
