General Summary

In alignment with the established policies and procedures of the East Lansing Public School District, the School Psychologist acts as consultant to special education students ages 3-26, their teachers, the special education staff, and to those students referred as being suspected as a student with a disability. The psychologist is directly responsible to the Director of Special Education.

About the Role

1. Provides services to students and their teachers in the area of educational intervention, which may include pre-referral consultation, identification of learning strengths and weaknesses in both special and general education, and evaluation of intervention strategies.
2. Provides services to students and their teachers in the area of curriculum, which may include training, provision of curriculum materials and suggestions tailored to student needs, as well as recommendations on classroom management, learning prescriptions, self-concept development, and the use of learning styles.
3. Consults with students, administrators, school personnel, parents, and others to recommend appropriate actions for addressing behaviors or situations that may affect a student's social or academic adjustment; may also be involved in school suspensions and exclusions, development of new programs, and serving as a liaison to community agencies, with participation in retention matters limited to cases involving suspected special education concerns.
4. Provides services in the special education identification and eligibility process for all students suspected of having a disability.
5. Submits written narrative reports for students referred for psychological evaluation, including background information, observations, tests administered, results and interpretations, summaries, and recommendations.
6. Administers tests that may include assessments of intelligence, achievement, personality, and perceptual-motor skills, with other trained personnel potentially assisting in aspects of testing.
7. Functions as an active member of the multidisciplinary evaluation team (MET).
8. Provides group and/or individual counseling to students in the school setting to support social and academic adjustment.
9. Participates in IEPs, parent conferences, teacher conferences, and trainings for parents, teachers, staff, and agencies as requested.
10. Possesses a strong knowledge base of a multi-tiered system of supports.

Education, Knowledge and Skills Required

1. Approval by the State Department of Education as a school psychologist or full licensure as a psychologist by the State of Michigan is required.
2. One year of successful experience as a school psychologist or its equivalent is desired.
3. Having obtained the ABA certificate, Board Certification as a Behavior Analyst (BCBA) or in process of doing so is desired.
