Summary Under the direction of, and in collaboration with unit management, performs responsibilities exercising initiative, judgment and independent decision-making within the scope of the State Nurse Practice Act, hospital policy and other governing organizations. Utilizes the nursing process (assessment, planning, intervention, evaluation) in a systematic approach to the direct and indirect care of patients and their families.Job DutiesThe essential functions of this job are identified with an asterisk (*) at the end of the bullet point.Obstetrics, Pediatrics, Medical, Surgical (inpatient/outpatient), Emergency, Senior Care, Nursery, Chemotherapy and Ambulance Transport as needed/delegated.Maintains certifications in all areas within scope of practice Supervision of LPNs, Nursing Assistants and Health Unit Coordinators as needed.*Demonstrates effective interviewing and assessment skills and integrates new or current techniques to obtain physical/psycho-social information from the patient/family to plan, implement, and evaluate patient care through the nursing process.*Initiates and maintains patient care plan to reflect current patient needs utilizing computerized documentation*Performs with minimal supervision, exercises good judgment to reduce errors. *Demonstrates willingness to work extra shifts if needed. *Demonstrates a willingness to train new staff. Attends annual skills fair. *Uses personal protective equipment that is appropriate for the given task. *Reports accidents or incidents and safety hazards promptly. *Cleans equipment, spills, etc. as necessary. *Identifies needs, instructs others, and actively supports the role of patient advocate/liaison by communication and documentation of patient information to the proper resources/agencies. *Proper computerized documentation will be maintained at all times. This includes, but not limited to admission, discharge, medication administration, teaching, activities of daily living and accurate intake/output. *Identifies needs and concerns involving safety/risk management and quality improvement issues, participates in the research, action, and evaluation of proposed resolutions/interventions.Other DutiesPlease note this job description is not designed to cover or contain a comprehensive listing of activities, duties or responsibilities that are required of the employee for this job. All will be expected to report unsafe conditions to a member of management.Required Education and ExperienceRequired QualificationsGraduate of an accredited school of nursingCurrent, unencumbered Registered Nurse (RN) license in the State of MinnesotaAt least 1 year of experience working in an Emergency Department is required.Successful completion of a criminal background check as required by the State of MinnesotaCertificationsRequired at Hire:Basic Life Support (BLS)Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support (ACLS)Required Within 6 Months of Hire:Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS)Required Within 1 year of Hire: Neonatal Resuscitation Program (NRP)Additional TrainingAll newly hired RNs will receive in‑house trauma training within the first year of employment.This training meets the educational objectives of the Minnesota State Trauma System, unless the RN has previously completed one of the following:Trauma Nursing Core Course (TNCC)Comprehensive Advanced Life Support (CALS)Advanced Trauma Care for Nurses (ATCN)Certified Acute Trauma Nurse (CATN)Trauma Care After Resuscitation (TCAR)Additional Eligibility QualificationsProfessional written and verbal communicationExpertise with computer based dataCustomer/Client FocusEthical ConductFlexibilityInitiativePersonal Effectiveness/CredibilityStress Management/ComposureTeamwork OrientationTechnical CapacityThoroughness Time ManagementQuality and Safety focusedPosition Type/Expected Hours of WorkWork hours will vary based on operational needs and employee availability.
