Description: This position is for a registered nurse in a progressive care unit. The facility has 885 licensed beds and is designated as a Level 1 Trauma Center. It is a teaching hospital and has specialized centers for chest pain and stroke. The unit consists of 28 beds with an average census of 26 patients. The patient types and common diagnoses include acute coronary syndrome, heart failure, NSTEMI/STEMI, and chest pain rule out. Additional patient care includes post cardiac catheterization, arrhythmia management, and vascular care. The typical patient ratio is 1 RN to 4-5 patients and 1 CNA to 11-14 patients. Support within the department includes CNAs for vital signs and blood glucose checks, as well as a charge nurse who may have patient assignments. Phlebotomy services are available for peripheral blood draws. Respiratory therapy is available 24/7, and hospitalist and intensivist support is also on-site around the clock. Telemetry monitoring is the responsibility of the nurses, who verify strips once per shift. Technology used in the unit includes electronic medical records, IV pumps, and medication dispensing systems. Floating may occur within the specialty division before transferring to other medical-surgical units within the facility. The unit culture emphasizes a family atmosphere and teamwork as the primary expectation.
