The unit has 25 beds and patient-nurse ratios of 1:4 during the day and 1:5 at night, depending on acuity. Common patient diagnoses include heavy orthopedic post-operative care, such as hips, knees, spine, and shoulder surgeries. Other common cases include general post-operative care, pneumonia, congestive heart failure, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, and geriatric patients with multiple comorbidities. There is no respiratory therapist in the unit; however, nurses have access to telehealth resources for respiratory management. Nurses are required to titrate drips, which may include heparin, insulin, cardizem, levophed, and dopamine. Nursing staff are responsible for reading telemetry strips using Mindray monitors, with some support available from charge nurses. Charge nurses may occasionally take on a patient assignment but primarily focus on administrative duties. Nurse aides are available with a ratio of 2 per shift to assist with patient care. Shifts consist of three 12-hour overnight shifts per week, which include working every third weekend. There are no on-call requirements, and floating to other units is not required. Scrubs should be navy blue, with flexibility for undershirts in various colors and prints. Charting is done using the EPIC system.
