POSITION: Assistant Village Engineer DATE: June 4, 2026 DEPARTMENT: Public Services & Engineering REPORTS TO: Village Engineer PAY GRADE: $100,143 – $154,187 (M105), Dependent on Qualifications FLSA STATUS: Exempt Position Purpose Assist in managing and directing municipal engineering activities of the Village. Supervision Exercised None Job Duties Essential Functions Manages the review of construction activities for municipal capital improvement infrastructure projects. Manages the review of private development projects in accordance with Village policies and practices, and local, state and federal codes and specifications. Duties include, but are not limited to: plan review, construction site management, stormwater management and construction inspection. Projects may include, but are not limited to: single-family redevelopment, additions or garage construction, work within property owner yards, commercial development, and subdivisions. Coordinates development projects with Village development consultants. Manages the review of Village right-of-way permits including utility companies and other construction activity. Manages the review of private and public stormwater issues and solutions. Coordinates potential drainage solution efforts with property owners. Manages data entry and submission for regulatory permit information. Assists in directing and coordinating the preparation of engineering plans, specifications, and estimates. Assists in incorporating public improvements required by the Public Services Department into municipal capital improvement projects. Assists in the development of graphical planning documents through the use of GIS applications and maintenance of GIS and other data sources. Assists in developing department procedures and policies to ensure the safe and efficient completion of both privately and publicly funded engineering projects. Assists in overseeing the maintenance of engineering records and the preparation of engineering reports or other plans. Assists in directing and managing the review of payments for municipal capital improvement projects. Works with other departments on engineering related issues. Receives citizen complaints and requests. Responds to requests for information and assistance from citizens and outside agencies and organizations. Operates and properly maintains all tools and equipment needed to perform job duties while adhering to all safety rules and practices. Marginal Functions Attends public meetings as assigned. Makes presentations as assigned. Attends conferences as assigned. Perform other duties as assigned. Environmental Factors The work environment includes an office setting and the outdoors. The incumbent is subject to inclement weather conditions, high levels of noise for an extended period of time, exposure to fumes or disagreeable odors and working in high vehicle traffic areas. Physical Requirements Regularly required to sit, use hands to finger, handle, or feel; reach with hands and arms and talk and hear. Occasionally required to stand; walk and stoop, kneel, crouch or crawl. May lift and/or move up to 20 pounds. Specific vision abilities include close vision, distance vision, depth and the ability to adjust focus. Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Knowledge in the principles and practices of municipal, land development, and transportation engineering and applicable laws and regulatory codes relevant to construction and design of public and private improvement projects. Ability to maintain accurate engineering records. Ability to handle multiple tasks simultaneously and in a timely manner. Ability to effectively communicate policies and procedures to other Village staff, outside contractors and residents. Ability to analyze and interpret engineering plans and specifications. Ability to explain complex engineering issues to lay personnel. Frequent contact with other Village staff, elected officials, outside contractors and residents; must be able to make presentations; must be able to communicate verbally and demonstrate good customer relations. Frequently prepares written reports; must be able to communicate in writing. Position Requirements Bachelor’s Degree in Civil Engineering or a related field and at least 5 years of increasingly responsible experience in civil engineering, preferably in a municipal organization.
