Senior Industrial Hygienist Trainee (Remote)

Duties Description Under the general direction of an Associate Industrial Hygienist, the incumbent will perform the following duties and may be required to take additional responsibilities as assigned. Inspect work sites to determine compliance with state and federal standards/guidelines. Identify health violations/hazards, particularly those associated with exposure to toxic or explosive chemicals and substances in the form of dusts, fibers (including asbestos), fumes, mists, vapors, gases, metals, and pathogenic organisms. Identify hazards such as noise and vibrations, light of various types, and other physical energies, including electromagnetic emissions. Confer with management and employee representatives and/or take appropriate enforcement or consultation actions as necessary. Conduct training for appropriate staff or public and private sector employers and employees. Qualifications NY HELPS Non‑Competitive Minimum Qualifications for this position. For the duration of the NY HELPS Program, the title may be filled via a non‑competitive appointment if the applicant meets the following minimum qualifications. The required degree is a bachelor’s or higher degree in one of the following fields: audiology, bacteriology, biochemistry, biological science, biology, biophysics, biostatistics, chemical engineering, chemistry, community health, environmental biology, environmental engineering, environmental health, environmental planning, environmental toxicology, epidemiology, genetics, geochemistry, health physics, human development, hydrology, industrial hygiene, medical science, medical technology, molecular biology, nursing, occupational health, petroleum engineering, physics, public health, or toxicology; including or supplemented by eight semester credit hours in chemistry. Industrial Hygienist Trainee 1 – Bachelor’s or higher degree as described above. Industrial Hygienist Trainee 2 – Bachelor’s or higher degree as described above, with one year of industrial hygiene experience. Senior Industrial Hygienist – Bachelor’s or higher degree as described above, with two years of industrial hygiene experience. Degree must be awarded by an institution accredited by a recognized agency; if awarded outside the U.S. independent verification of equivalency is required. Applicants must provide verification during the interview. Reassignment Qualifications Current Department of Labor employees only, with at least one year of permanent or contingent‑permanent or 55b/c service in a related supervisory title; if less than one year, the applicant must be reachable on the current eligible list for the position, if one exists. Transfer Qualifications Industrial Hygienist Trainee 1 – One year of permanent, contingent‑permanent, or 55b/c service in a title of grade 12 or higher determined to be administrative. Industrial Hygienist Trainee 2 – One year of permanent, contingent‑permanent, or 55b/c service in a title of grade 14 or higher determined to be administrative. Senior Industrial Hygienist – One year of permanent, contingent‑permanent, or 55b/c service in a title of grade 18 or higher determined to be administrative. Transfer candidates must also possess a bachelor’s or higher degree in one of the fields listed above, including or supplemented by eight semester credit hours in chemistry. Preferred Qualifications Ability to initiate and maintain relationships across a diverse set of stakeholders. Ability to utilize a computer. Additional Comments May require a fingerprint background check prior to appointment. Travel requirements may include multiple days and nights for training, not to exceed one week at a time. Some positions may require a medical examination prior to appointment; candidates will be responsible for the associated costs. Periodic medical examinations may be required thereafter. Position‑specific duties may include occasional altered work schedules or job assignments requiring availability for evenings or out‑stationed assignments. Candidates with no previous state service will begin at the starting rate of the salary range listed above. Telecommuting is available and can be discussed during the interview. Employment at the Department of Labor is contingent upon the maintenance of a valid work authorization and the necessary documentation to work legally in the United States. Unit assignments may change in the future; such changes will not affect the incumbent’s title, salary, or location.
