Junior Estimator

Position Summary

The Junior Estimator is responsible for preparing accurate and timely labor and material estimates for fabricated products and components, including GSE process panels, tooling, machined items, and welded components. This position supports the estimating team by reviewing customer drawings and specifications, performing material and labor takeoffs, obtaining vendor and subcontractor pricing, and preparing quotes for management review.

The ideal candidate has a strong attention to detail, an analytical mindset, and a basic understanding of manufacturing and fabrication processes. The Junior Estimator will work closely with Estimating and Operations to develop competitive and accurate estimates.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

Prepare complete labor and material estimates for standard and moderately complex fabrication and manufacturing jobs.

Review and interpret engineering drawings, specifications, bills of materials, customer requirements, and other project documentation.

Identify discrepancies, missing information, and potential estimating risks during the review process.

Maintain accurate estimating records, pricing information, and supporting documentation.

Assist with maintaining and updating standard labor rates, material pricing, and estimating data.

Communicate with internal departments and outside vendors to obtain information necessary to complete estimates.

Assist senior estimators with more complex estimates and special projects as needed.

Develop an understanding of fabrication processes, production capabilities, material requirements, and associated costs.

Follow established estimating procedures, quality standards, and company policies.

Perform other duties as assigned.

Education & Experience

High school diploma or equivalent required.

Associate degree or technical education in manufacturing, engineering, construction, drafting, business, or a related field preferred.

1–3 years of experience in estimating, manufacturing, fabrication, engineering, production, purchasing, or a related field.

Experience in a fabrication or manufacturing environment is preferred.

Equivalent combination of education, training, and experience may be considered.

Required Qualifications

Ability to read and interpret engineering drawings, fabrication drawings, specifications, and related technical documents.

Basic understanding of manufacturing and fabrication processes and associated costs.

Proficiency with Microsoft Excel and the ability to work with spreadsheets, formulas, and data.

Ability to learn and effectively use estimating software, ERP systems, and other company-specific tools.

Strong mathematical, analytical, and problem-solving skills.

Excellent attention to detail and accuracy.

Ability to organize and prioritize multiple estimates and deadlines.

Strong written and verbal communication skills.

Ability to work effectively both independently and as part of a team.

Ability to identify and communicate potential cost, scope, or schedule issues.

Must be able to clear a background check to obtain access to government access.

Preferred Qualifications

Experience estimating welded assemblies, machined components, process panels, tooling, or other custom-fabricated products.

Familiarity with materials commonly used in industrial fabrication, including various grades of steel, stainless steel, aluminum, and other metals.

Familiarity with welding, machining, cutting, forming, assembly, and other fabrication processes.

Experience working with ERP, MRP, or manufacturing estimating systems.

Basic knowledge of GD&T, tolerances, or manufacturing specifications.

Experience obtaining and comparing vendor or subcontractor quotations.

Physical Requirements

Ability to sit and work at a computer for extended periods.

Ability to communicate effectively in person, by telephone, and electronically.

Ability to occasionally walk through manufacturing and fabrication areas.

Ability to occasionally lift or carry materials or documents weighing up to 25 pounds, as required.
