Data Engineer II (Tech Lead)

Travelers is seeking a Data Engineer II with Tech Lead responsibilities to design, build, and operationalize complex data solutions that power AI, ML, and enterprise analytics. This onsite role in Hartford, CT, combines hands-on data engineering with leadership duties to guide data initiatives across cloud platforms and ETL environments. The position emphasizes delivering reliable data products while incorporating governance, security, and quality throughout the data lifecycle. Responsibilities Build and operationalize complex data solutions, correct problems, apply transformations, and recommending data cleansing/quality solutions. Design complex data solutions. Analyze complex data sources to determine value and usage, and recommend data to include in analytical processes. Incorporate core data management competencies including data governance, data security, and data quality. Collaborate within and across teams to support delivery and educate end users on complex data products and analytic environments. Perform data and system analysis, assessment, and resolution for complex defects and incidents and correct as appropriate. Test data movement, transformation code, and data components. Perform other duties as assigned. Requirements Bachelor's Degree in STEM related field or equivalent. Eight years of related experience. Highly proficient in ETL tools (Abinitio, Databricks), with AWS cloud platforms, programming languages (Python, SQL), and modern data engineering practices. Ability to deliver work at a steady, predictable pace to meet commitments, release complete solutions in small batches, and identify and negotiate important tradeoffs. Proven domain expertise with understanding of technical concepts and industry trends, plus in-depth knowledge of current systems and some knowledge of adjacent systems. Strong problem solver who designs for longevity and develops innovative ways to resolve issues. Strong written and verbal communication skills and the ability to collaborate effectively with team members and business partners. Ability to lead team members and foster a safe environment for others to learn and grow as engineers; self motivated with a track record of identifying opportunities and tracking team efforts. Bachelor's degree in computer science, related STEM field, or its equivalent in education and/or work experience. 4 additional years of data engineering experience.
