Description of Work

The primary purpose of these positions is to provide academic instruction for students who are deaf and hard of hearing in their primary mode of communication within a residential education setting. Positions are responsible for fostering an inclusive and effective learning environment tailored to students' unique needs, providing direction and coordination of assigned education programs.

About the North Carolina School for the Deaf:

The North Carolina School for the Deaf (NCSD) is a specialty school for Deaf/Hard of Hearing (D/HH) students, ages 3 (three) to 22 (twenty-two), with a catchment area encompassing the 46 westernmost counties in North Carolina. Established in 1894, the school provided significant milestones in deaf and blind education.

North Carolina School for the Deaf operates per the academic calendar, from August to May, with additional summer programming in June. Students are typically present on campus Sunday afternoons through Friday afternoons. In general, support services and administration operate year-round.

Pursuant to House Bill 11, all employees, hired in classified (and certified) positions on or after July 1, 2024, are employed pursuant to Chapter 115C of the General Statutes. This includes any transfers to NCSD from another state agency who are currently considered Chapter 126 (SPA) employees.

Job Duties:

  • Conduct individual and small group instruction in academic areas such as reading, math, science, etc. as well as any non-academic areas, if necessary, which may be addressed by the IEP for students K-12 depending on placement at Supervisor’s discretion.
  • Skill and knowledge to implement assigned curricula, implementation of daily-prepared lessons, utilization of acquired and accumulated materials, resources, and manipulatives as well as assessing and documenting students’ progress and performance.
  • Perform related instructional activities such as: planning educational activities; preparing IEP’s, attending to individual problems relating to student progress, performance, or behavior.
  • Prepare report cards; supervise and instruct teaching assistants.
  • Gather and prepare instructional materials; supervise student teachers and/or observers from various colleges.
  • Participate in school related activities; attend committee meetings and in–service workshops;
  • Plan and implement field trips.
  • Administering formal and informal test/assessments.

Management Preferences:

  • Bachelor's degree in education, Deaf Education, Special Education, or a related field from an accredited institution.
  • North Carolina teaching license or eligibility for licensure in Deaf Education or a related area.
  • Proficiency in American Sign Language (ASL) is required; ASLPI Level 3 or higher preferred.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of deaf culture, deaf education methodologies, and communication strategies for deaf and hard-of-hearing individuals.
  • Experience working with school-aged deaf or hard-of-hearing students is highly desirable.
  • Strong classroom management skills and the ability to create an engaging learning atmosphere.
  • Excellent communication, interpersonal, and organizational skills.
  • Ability to work effectively as part of a multidisciplinary team.

Recruitment Salary Range:

$42,000 to $61,545 - Dependent on qualifying education and relevant experience.

Recruitment Salary Range $42,000 to $61,545 - Dependent on qualifying education and relevant experience.

This position is designated Mandatory and must report or stay over during adverse weather events.

Supplemental Information:

NCSD uses the Merit-Based Recruitment and Selection Plan to fill positions subject and not subject to the State Human Resources Act with the most qualified individuals. Hiring salary will be based on relevant qualifications, internal equity, and budgetary considerations pertinent to the advertised position.
