Underwriter II

Position Summary Underwriter I is responsible for the profitability of an assigned book of business, including prospective and renewing business in the 51‑99 and 100+ market segment. The role includes supporting financial management reports, participating in new product and rating methodology development, and leading projects to improve underwriting operations. Key Responsibilities Accurately and timely calculate rates for 51‑99 and 100+ prospective opportunities, and 100‑500 renewal accounts. Work with multiple funding arrangements (insured, self‑insured, level‑funded). Enforce Underwriting Policies and Procedures and approve exceptions. Develop pricing strategies to achieve profitability and market share targets. Participate in development of new rating practices. Prepare actuarial and underwriting analyses for account proposals and renewals, including whole account and contribution strategy recommendations. Analyze comparative advantages of commercial programs in competitive bidding situations. Monitor and report on profitability and persistency of the assigned book of business. Negotiate prices with customers, consultants, and brokers to retain and grow enrollment while meeting profitability goals. Present financial proposals and renewals to internal stakeholders and external customers. Capabilities Strong initiative focused on improving organizational performance. Proficiency with Microsoft Office and ability to learn new underwriting tools. Experience and Education Undergraduate degree from an accredited college/university; Finance or Economics preferred. HIAA or Certified Employee Benefit Specialist (CEBS) designation preferred. Minimum of 3 years group health underwriting experience. Excellent written and verbal communication skills to explain technical concepts to clients and stakeholders. Strong attention to detail and thoroughness in risk review. Ability to work independently and with tight deadlines. Knowledge of health benefit programs and financial arrangements. Location Boston, MA or Hingham, MA offices. Time Type Full time.
