Step into the shop floor as a CNC Machining Trainee

You clock in, review the setup sheet, and download the program from the server to the CNC control. You verify X, Y, and Z on a vertical mill, mount the fixture, and secure the workpiece with precision. After a dry run, you bring the spindle up to speed, watch the coolant flow, and listen for any change in tone that might hint at a dull tool or vibration. First article complete—you reach for the micrometers, calipers, and height gauge to confirm the part meets spec. While the machine handles the next cycle, you stage tooling for the next job, tidy your space, and prepare for a horizontal setup later in the shift.

• Set up and operate automated CNC vertical and horizontal machining centers.
• Identify and reference the X, Y, Z axes on both vertical and horizontal machines.
• Perform daily point checks, note concerns, and initiate maintenance requests when appropriate.
• Help the department hit targets for efficiency, scrap control, time-motion, and reduced setup times.
• Interpret blueprints, sketches, drawings, setup sheets, and work instructions accurately.
• Use scales, calipers, micrometers, and height gauges to verify conformance to specifications.
• Replace dull cutting tools using established safety protocols.
• Mount, install, align, and secure tools, attachments, fixtures, and workpieces with hand tools and precision instruments.
• Listen for irregular sounds; adjust as needed and notify lead/supervisor when issues arise.
• Adjust feeds/speeds, change cutting tools, or modify machine controls if programming is faulty or a malfunction occurs.
• Stop machines to remove finished pieces and to change tooling, setup, or workpiece placement per the required sequence.
• Lift and position workpieces manually or with hoists/cranes.
• Enter command instructions into the control to start and run jobs.
• Monitor and control coolant systems throughout the run.
• Transfer programs from servers to CNC modules via the network.
• While machines are running, set up future jobs, perform part checks/inspections, clean the area, and handle other assigned duties.
• Deburr machined parts as required.
• Follow all safety policies and use required PPE consistently.
• Communicate effectively in English and follow written and verbal instructions.
• Maintain regular on-site attendance.

• High school diploma or GED (required).
• 1+ year of experience in a manufacturing environment (required).
• Hands-on experience with micrometers, calipers, height gauges, and other precision measuring tools (required).
• Ability to read and accurately interpret shop blueprints, sketches, and technical instructions (strongly preferred).
• Experience using cranes, forklifts, or similar heavy/oversized material handling equipment (preferred).
