System-Wide Bus Driver

POSITION SYSTEM-WIDE BUS DRIVER

QUALIFICATIONS

High School diploma or GED preferred; Must have at least six (6) months of driving experience as a licensed motor vehicle operator. Valid North Carolina Commercial Driver's License (CDL) with Passenger (P) and School Bus (S) endorsements (or willingness to obtain). Clean driving record with no major violations. Ability to pass a background check, drug screening, and physical examination. Strong communication and interpersonal skills. Ability to manage student behavior in a firm yet compassionate manner. Knowledge of basic vehicle maintenance and emergency procedures. Punctual, reliable, and committed to student safety.

Ten-month, full-time position Starting Salary: $19.20 per hour Full State Benefits package (30 hours/week +), or Ten-month, part-time position Starting Salary: $19.20 per hour Partial State Benefits package (2029 hours/week)

Assistant Director of Transportation or his/her designee

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential function satisfactorily. The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill, and/or ability required.

• Safely operate a school bus along designated routes, ensuring on-time arrivals and departures.
• Conduct pre-trip and post-trip vehicle inspections to ensure the bus is in proper working condition.
• Maintain student discipline and ensure adherence to safety rules while on the bus.
• Assist students with disabilities or special needs in boarding and exiting the bus, as required.
• Communicate effectively with school staff, parents, and transportation personnel regarding student behavior, route changes, or delays.
• Follow all local, state, and federal traffic laws, as well as school district policies and procedures.
• Report any mechanical issues, accidents, or incidents to the transportation department promptly.
• Keep accurate records of mileage, attendance, and incidents as required.
• Maintain a clean and orderly bus interior.
• Attend mandatory training sessions, safety meetings, and professional development as required.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS & ABILITIES

Knowledge of local, state, and federal traffic laws and regulations related to school bus operations. Understanding of basic vehicle maintenance and safety procedures. Familiarity with student behavior management techniques. Awareness of emergency procedures and first aid practices. Ability to remain calm and composed in stressful situations. Ability to enforce bus safety rules and manage student behavior effectively. Ability to follow written and verbal instructions accurately. Ability to work independently while also collaborating with school staff and transportation personnel. Strong defensive driving and vehicle maneuvering skills. Effective communication skills for interacting with students, parents, and school personnel. Ability to maintain accurate records and complete reports as required. Problem-solving skills to handle unexpected route changes, delays, or student issues.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

Must be able to sit and operate a vehicle for prolonged periods, often exceeding one hour at a time. Requires sufficient hand, arm, and upper-body strength to turn a large steering wheel, operate foot pedals, and manipulate other vehicle controls. Must be able to enter and exit the bus multiple times daily, requiring the ability to climb and descend steps with or without assistance. Occasionally required to lift or carry up to 50 lbs, such as assisting students, handling emergency equipment, or lifting the hood for inspections. Frequent use of hands and arms to open and close bus doors, adjust mirrors, and secure students if necessary. May be required to kneel, bend, or crouch when inspecting the bus, securing wheelchairs, or assisting students. Must have adequate hearing to detect traffic sounds, alarms, or student concerns and communicate effectively with students, parents, and staff. Must have 20/40 corrected vision (or as required by CDL regulations) with good peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to see and read road signs, bus mirrors, and student movements inside and outside the bus. Requires the ability to respond quickly to potential hazards, student emergencies, or sudden changes in traffic conditions.

ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS

Must be 21 years of age OR 20 years old with 2 years of college completed; Must hold a valid NC driver's license. Must be willing to complete all applicable training to obtain CDL with P/S endorsement if not already held; Pre-employment DOT Drug Test is required; Pre-employment background check is required; DMV driving record check is required; and Completion and passing of required DOT physical.
