Registered Nurse (RN) In Emergency Department

The RN implements professional nursing practice centered on the patient as a whole person. The focus is on creating a caring environment centered on healing and wellness. Nursing practices are based on evidence and current research. This includes adherence to policies, procedures, regulatory standards, and professional guidelines. Clinical decision-making incorporates all four phases of the nursing process, critical thinking, and creativity. Nursing excellence is promoted through fostering relationships among nursing staff and across other disciplines. The RN coordinates, ensures, and provides direct patient care activities on the unit. This includes provision of nursing rounds, assessments, treatments, and facilitating admission, transfer, and discharge activities. Patient and family-centered education is a key component of care. The RN develops individualized treatment planning as applicable.

Responsibilities include:

• Performing and documenting comprehensive patient assessments in accordance with the RN's scope of practice and hospital policies.
• Considering the patient's culture, age, and developmental level.
• Identifying patient risk factors and presenting complaints.
• Collecting both objective and subjective data.
• Verifying admission assessments when obtained by others.
• Developing a prioritized problem list based on input from the interdisciplinary team.
• Designing actions and interventions relevant to the patient's culture and age.
• Determining desired outcomes in coordination with the patient and family in accordance with the medical plan of care.
• Implementing patient care therapies and procedures within the established policies and cultural competencies.
• Explaining procedures, treatments, and processes to patients and families.
• Initiating actions to alleviate patient stress and discomfort.
• Recognizing, responding to, and communicating changes in patient conditions appropriately.
• Conducting ongoing assessments and documenting responses to therapies in accordance with hospital policies.
• Delegating tasks appropriately and overseeing team members in patient care activities.
• Monitoring the accuracy and completeness of delegated patient care.
• Identifying and addressing educational needs of patients related to prioritized problems.
• Facilitating the patient discharge process by executing discharge orders in a timely manner.
• Collaborating with Case Management and others as indicated.

The RN is expected to actively participate in unit-based activities that support organizational values and priorities. Promoting a positive group dynamic and healing environment through words and actions is essential. Assuring nursing excellence in accordance with accepted standards, evidence-based practice, and a caring philosophy is fundamental. The RN will actively participate in quality improvement activities and core measures, focusing on aspects such as patient satisfaction and patient safety metrics. Using a holistic perspective regarding patient care is emphasized.
