Registered Nurse II

Evening Shift (12p - 12a) At Houston Methodist, the Registered Nurse (RN) II position is a licensed staff nurse, an experienced clinician, functioning at the Competent to Proficient stage of Benner’s model of clinical practice. The RN II provides professional nursing care to a diverse patient population, conducts nursing assessments, assists with exams and treatment, patient education, and maintains medical records. The RN II delivers direct patient care effectively and efficiently, including patients with varied and complex needs. This position communicates and collaborates with physicians and the interprofessional health care team to facilitate, coordinate, and maintain compassionate, efficient, quality care and achievement of desired treatment outcomes. The RN II demonstrates clinical competence when providing care, utilizing technology, administering medications, performing procedures, and managing emergencies, acting as a patient and family advocate. This position assumes leadership roles and may serve as charge nurse, preceptor, or contribute to service line or hospital-wide initiatives in partnership with management. FLSA STATUS : Non‑exempt Qualifications Graduate of an education program approved by the credentialing body for the required credential(s) listed in the Licenses and Certifications section. Twelve months registered nurse experience in a healthcare environment. Licenses and Certifications RN - Registered Nurse - Texas State Licensure - Texas Board of Nursing, PSV Compact Licensure – must obtain permanent Texas license within 60 days if establishing residency. BLS - Basic Life Support or Instructor (AHA) – American Heart Association. ACLS - Advanced Cardiac Life Support or Instructor (AHA) – American Heart Association. PALS - Pediatric Advanced Life Support or Instructor (AHA) – American Heart Association within 4 months. NIHSTROKE - National Institute of Health Stroke Scale Certification (AHA) – American Heart Association within 4 months. NVCRISIS - Nonviolent Crisis Intervention or Instructor (CPI) – Crisis Prevention Institute within 4 months. Preferred: Magnet – ANCC Recognized Certification. Preferred: ENPC - Emergency Nursing Pediatric Certification (ENA). Preferred: TNCC - Trauma Nursing Core Course or Instructor (ENA). Knowledge and Abilities Demonstrates the skills and competencies necessary to safely perform the assigned job, as determined through ongoing assessments and performance evaluations. Proficiency in speaking, reading, and writing English necessary to perform essential functions, especially activities impacting patient or employee safety. Effectively communicates with patients, physicians, family members, and co‑workers in a customer‑service focus and positive language. Strong assessment, organizational, and problem‑solving skills, capable of prioritizing multiple tasks. Functions independently and exercises judgment in interactions with physicians, the interprofessional team, patients, and families. Uses critical thinking and clinical judgment to work autonomously as defined by the Nurse Practice Act. Proficient time‑management skills. Maintains professional contributions as defined in the Clinical Career Path program guide. Working knowledge of Microsoft Outlook. Contributes to teamwork by being aware of overall unit acuity, consistently offering assistance, and responding positively to requests for help. Implements staff education specific to patient populations and unit processes; coaches and mentors other staff and students. Service Essential Functions Follows patient and family‑centered care standards as outlined in the Houston Methodist Professional Nursing Practice document. Develops, updates, and communicates plan of care, including discharge, in partnership with the patient, family, and interprofessional team. Provides patient teaching based on learning needs and adapts teaching methods accordingly. Helps drive improvement of department patient satisfaction score through peer‑to‑peer accountability to service standards. Quality/Safety Essential Functions Adheres to standards of care related to the nursing process as outlined in the Professional Nursing Practice document. Follows regulatory and professional practice standards and identifies areas for improvement with evidence‑based research. Provides and modifies care to complex patients, coordinating with the interprofessional team. Improves quality and safety scores on the unit‑based scorecard through peer‑to‑peer accountability, reporting near misses, and collaboration. Finance Essential Functions Manages time effectively, documents care promptly, and minimizes incidental overtime. Provides input into unit resource utilization, including capital and operational budget needs. Contributes to meeting department financial targets on the unit‑based scorecard. Growth/Innovation Essential Functions Identifies and presents areas for innovation, efficiency, and improvement using evidence‑based literature. Champions new care pathways or service line implementation to improve community service. Researches and presents improvement options to shared governance and leadership.
