Estimated Appointment End Date (Continuous if Blank) Full/Part-Time Full time Job Type Regular Compensation $57,388.20 Basic Purpose Positions in this job family are assigned responsibilities involving the coordination, supervision, and direction of a correctional security program, maintaining security, control, and custody of inmates, complying with policies, procedures, rules and regulations, and facilitating the successful operation of a state adult correctional facility. Typical Functions Coordinates and supervises or directs correctional security functions and activities at an adult correctional facility; may serve as a shift supervisor with responsibility for all assigned units and functions in a medium or maximum security facility or as the chief of security in a minimum security facility. May serve as commander of a correctional emergency response team; schedules training exercises and coordinates activities. Conducts special investigations, particularly concerning incidents that occur during assigned shifts. Coordinates and supervises security, riot and escape procedures, including procedures for inmate counts and searches for escape materials and contraband. Prepares daily work schedules for security personnel; prepares and maintains appropriate records concerning employees and residents. Conducts inspections of assigned staff at beginning of shift to assure proper attire and fitness for duty; makes periodic inspections of posts to assure that they are properly maintained; prepares administrative reports concerning the operation of the shift. Acts as liaison to local law enforcement agencies; provides information and file changes; arranges court appearances. Responsible for SMU and/or restricted housing, depending on facility security level. Serves as a member of the administrative institutional staff; participates in the formulation of institutional policies, rules and regulations. Provides a leadership role to subordinate correctional officers and correctional security managers. Serves as a positive role model. Completes performance reviews for subordinates, administers progressive discipline, monitors and approves officers' time, and clears exceptions. Enforces institutional rules and regulations; maintains security of various assigned areas involving long periods of sitting, standing, and/or walking. Legal Eligibility No person who has received a verdict of guilty or pled guilty or nolo contendere to any offense required to register pursuant to the Sex Offenders Registration Act is eligible for employment as a peace officer. (57 O.S. 589.C) No person who has been convicted of a crime of moral turpitude who has not received a full pardon from the proper agency is eligible for employment as a peace officer. (70 O.S. 3311) No person who has been convicted of a nonviolent felony and who has not received a full pardon from the proper authority, or who has been convicted of any other felony offense, is eligible for employment in this job classification. (21 O.S. 1283.B) No person who has been convicted of a misdemeanor crime of domestic violence, who has not been pardoned for, or had the conviction expunged or set aside, or is subject to a court order that restrains the person from harassing, stalking, or threatening an intimate partner or the partners’ child or engaging in other conduct that would place an intimate partner or the partners’ child in reasonable fear of bodily injury and includes a finding that the person is a credible threat; or who has been dishonorably discharged from any branch of the armed services is eligible for employment in this job classification. (18 U.S.C. 922) Safety Sensitive Position The Department of Corrections has determined that some positions in this job family are safety sensitive as defined by63 O.S. §427.8. Level Descriptor At this level employees serve as a correctional security captain with overall responsibility for the operations of an assigned shift within a correctional security facility, as well as supervision of staff. Responsibilities may involve ensuring the proper functioning of the electronic, mechanical, surveillance, and physical security systems; overseeing physical and sanitary conditions; special investigations; adherence to operational and policy protocols; directing the correctional emergency response team; and assumption of the operation and management of the facility after normal business hours or in the absence of the chief of security. Knowledge, Skills, Abilities, and Competencies Knowledge of supervisory methods and techniques; of staffing patterns and scheduling the distribution of staff and work assignments; of methods and objectives of discipline required for inmates under restraint; of the psychology of inmate behavior; of the use and care of firearms; of proper restraint methods and techniques; of the fundamentals of English usage; of basic math; and of report writing techniques. Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships; to follow oral and written instructions; to gather and organize facts and complete clear, concise reports; to quickly evaluate a situation and adopt an effective course of action. Exercise alertness and be able to act quickly in an emergency; effectively communicate security techniques; maintain proficiency in firearms; and assess and manage conflict resolutions within the inmate population. Education and Experience Four years of experience in correctional or security work for a government agency or private corrections agency. Statutory requirements of Title57, O.S. Section510: minimum age 20 years; possession of thirty (30) semester hours from an accredited college or university; or possession of a high school diploma or GED equivalent and completion of a training course conducted by or approved by the Department and certified by the Council on Law Enforcement Education and Training either prior to employment or during the first six (6) months of employment. Special Requirements Be of good moral character. Satisfactory completion of an adequate training program for correctional officers and guards, as prescribed and approved by the State Board of Corrections, before going on duty alone. Satisfactory completion of a physical fitness test in keeping with the conditions of the job description on an annual basis and along the guidelines established by the Department of Corrections. Possess a valid driver’s license at the time of appointment to perform necessary travel. Applicants will be subject to drug testing. Applicants must be willing and able to work any assigned shift or day of the week. Employees may be designated as peace officers by the Director and required to meet the training and screening requirements conducted by the Department and certified by the Council on Law Enforcement Education and Training.
