A leading AI research company that works with large AI companies is seeking experienced mechanical engineers to work as remote AI trainers and evaluate how frontier AI models handle real engineering work: sizing a component against a real load case, spotting interference in a CAD assembly, a tolerance stack-up, a thermal or fluids calculation, a DFM decision or a failure analysis. The models can talk fluently about mechanical engineering; what they cannot yet do reliably is the actual work. This is project-based, fully remote work you can do alongside a current job, including evenings and weekends.

What the Work Involves
Design realistic tasks from your own work, such as a component sizing calculation with a worked solution, a tolerance stack-up, a CAD assembly review, a thermal or fluids analysis, a DFM and DFA review or a test and validation plan
Author the supporting files an engineer would use: drawings, CAD models, load cases, material data, test data, specifications
Run those tasks through frontier AI models and grade the calculation, design review, analysis or report they produce
Write closed-ended problems with worked solutions and acceptance criteria, plus grading rubrics
Compare two model outputs on the same task and document where each fell short
Flag concrete failures: wrong boundary conditions, unit errors, missed interferences, tolerance stacks that do not close, unsafe factors of safety
Areas of ExpertiseYou need depth in at least one of these, plus enough working knowledge of the others to judge work in adjacent areas:
Mechanical design and CAD (clearances, tolerances, mechanisms)
Structures and materials (stress, fatigue, buckling, failure analysis)
Thermal and fluids (heat transfer, HVAC, pumps and piping)
Dynamics and controls (vibration, kinematics, rotating machinery)
Manufacturing (DFM and DFA, GD&T, process selection)
Who This Is For
2+ years of professional mechanical engineering in any specialty: product development, manufacturing, thermal, structural, automotive, aerospace, HVAC, robotics, energy or medical devices
Degree in mechanical engineering or a related field; PE licensure is a plus but not required
Fluent in the tools of your specialty: CAD (SolidWorks, Fusion 360, Onshape, Creo, NX, CATIA or Inventor), FEA or CFD, MATLAB or Python
You currently do, or recently did, the design, analysis or test work yourself
Meticulous: you check your own work and enjoy finding the edge case that breaks an assumption
Hands-on practitioner: you currently do, or recently did, the work yourself as an individual contributor, not solely as a manager
Strong written English; you can explain clearly why a result is wrong, not only that it is
Familiar with AI tools such as Claude or ChatGPT, with the judgment to tell a well-reasoned answer from a plausible-sounding wrong one
Comfortable working independently, following detailed written instructions and incorporating feedback
Pay, Hours and Location
Pay: $40 to $125 per hour, depending on project and expertise. Paid via PayPal on a regular schedule. You are paid for every step you complete
Hours: Minimum 10 hours per week with no maximum; full-time hours are available. Multi-day task timers let you spread work across days
Location: Remote. Must be based in the United States, Canada, or the UK
Tools: Access to the AI models you will evaluate is provided; no personal subscription needed
